This might be misplaced on this forum but I wanted to make sure you guys get a chance to read this.
What I'm looking for is the ability to listen to music and still have a GMRS/FRS 2-way radio for talking to my group. I have no problems mounting any hardware but is there such a device that will accept input and then interrupt when there is a transmission from another biker?
I know Chatterbox has some expensive options that do this but I'm trying to save some buck. If I can't, then I'll lean Chatterbox. I just figured I'd ask because my normal research is turning up pretty empty. Who is Chatterbox's competition?
Oh, and how's this for an idea; Install a wifi router on my bike that has boosted signal range from antenna dbi and dd-wrt (hacker firmware) to increase transmission range. Use some kind of ipod touch or similar device to connect to the wifi network from each bike to give music and audio intercom? lol Can you tell I'm a computer geek?

You should be able to find products from a number of vendors to do what you want. Pretty much all of the intercom vendors have aux inputs with overrides for com. Most will allow you to have intercom, MP3, GPS, and bike to bike...... I'd like to have the setup with bluetooth, so you could route a phone into the link as well.....

I'd start with the usual list of accessory vendors, and look at the intercom options they list.

I was going to suggest some intercom brands, but, then I saw he was looking to save money. Intercoms are expensive, no matter who makes them.

You could still suggest those brands so I can compare them to what chatterbox offers. For me, I just can't seem to get a good feel on what brands are "popular" with motorcyclists. The popular brands are where I feel comfortable but if there is a less known brand that is half the price then I would strongly consider it. I wish there was some kind of sticky thread comparing the brands and models in a tabular format. Maybe that'll be my job here, lol

No problem. There is autocomm, starcom, baehr, and J&M. All are more expensive than the chatterbox.

Autocomm seems to have the most functionality and best performance to go along with their price.

I wasn't searching for "intercoms" but instead radios because the intercom is not what I'm interested in. I think I've had 2 passengers so far, lol. Neither of which had trouble hearing me...
Again, thanks for the link.
No worries....

Most entertainment systems on bikes started from the addition of speakers to the helmet. Intercoms were the first widespread application, then adding CBs, then on to where they are now.

As the whole thing pretty much grew out of intercom systems, they're pretty much grouped that way out of habit, I think.

FWIW, I did a lot of comparison shopping back in '04 when I was looking for bike-to-bike radios for my g/f and I. Everything that was comparable to the Chatterbox, feature-wise (range, audio input, aux input, voice activation, auto-switch on talk), and every other comparable brand was more expensive. We've been using the same ones for going on 7 seasons now and they've never failed. There are probably more choices out there than when I was looking, so maybe you'll find something better, but Chatterbox has been around for a while and with the experience I've had with them, they're what I'd recommend.
