Still fairly new to riding. As of right now I ride a shark helmet, not sure what size it is though. When I used to have a quad I was a large on an HJC helmet. Does that mean I will be a large in generally every helmet or does it depend on the brand? I don't want to buy a helmet from the dealer when I can get it for 100's less online but I also don't want to buy a helmet that doesn't fit..

EDIT: And the size tag is missing from inside the helmet(b4 captain obvious says to check that size tag lol)

You will probably be a large in most helmets, but it DOES vary depending on the manufacturer of your helmet. I'm a medium in most helmets, but my Scorpion is a large and it fits better than most mediums.

Im an XL in HJC, I tried on a XL Shoei the other day that also fit great, maybe better than the HJC.
I tried an XL AND an XXL Icon and they simply wouldnt fit over my fat fucking skull, and if I managed to get it on, it would probably have to be cut off.

Thats my only experience so far

the euro helmets will be different sizes because most euros are smaller. thats why their shoes and clothe sizes are off americans sizes.

the shark rsr2 is too small for me in the size i wear. so for some brands you need to try them out.

GO to a good store and try on various helmets. When you find a good one that fits you right, BUY IT THERE, so that the store will still be there to serve you next time you need one.

Yes, you can save money buying online, except that you don't know what you're getting, and if something isn't right it's a big PITA. Quit being such damn cheapskates everyone and support your local retailers. Everyone complains that it's hard to get good customer service anymore -- well it's because y'all won't pay anything to get it. If you always buy strictly by the bottom line, that's exactly the level of service you will get.

in theory, yes

but in reality a student who is not wealthy can't afford the difference between retail and online.

in some cases you can save over a hundred which is a big deal. and these online retailers also have regular stores and have excellent customer service.

new enough, sbtg, bikebandit, etc are all excellent companies. especially sbtg since brian makes all those cool review videos.

anyways in my area there is no mom and pop store struggling, only a giant dealer who wont be going under anytime soon. and they have a history of ripping people off.

You could get your head measured, then do some research online to see what head measurement ranges correspond to what sizes for each manufacturer that you are interested in. On both of my helmets there is a S,M,L type designation then below it there is a head circumference designation. Many online sites like Bike Bandit will have fitment charts for the manufacturer so you can measure yourself to see if you will fit before you buy.

Depends on the store. I buy my stuff at competition cycle down here and their stuff is either as cheap or cheaper than online. If there's ever a problem at all, I just take it back, no questions asked. Can't do that online without going to a UPS store and shipping it back.

There are certain things I would never buy online.

Shoes
pants
helmets

or anything else that may vary in size. Sometimes, even the same sizes from the same manufacture may differ.

I wore a size Large HJC CL-15, and I recently bought a size Large KBC TK-8 and it fits like a medium HJC did. But it did break in quite nicely, took forever though.
