I'm thinking about buying this bike from my neighbor that doesn't have a title. He has no clue where it is and I called the VIN number in to the state police and they verified that it was not stolen. So if I buy the bike how can I get the title for it. He said he bought it from a friend that bought it at an auction. I'm in VA for the summer and would like to register it here.

Have the neighbor get a duplicate title from the dmv using the registration information. If he owns it, the title's clean, and no lien, it should be no problem. There should be a form (appication for duplicate title) for that with your state dmv or whatever they call that agency. Then you'll be starting out clean.

The thing is that the bike is not in his name, he bought it with a bill of sale from his friend that bought it at a police auction and that friend is no where to be found. Any suggestions on this scenario?

Have your neighbor sort it out. If he doesn't, it will be really hard for you to do it. Sounds like he needs to go to the dmv and do some paperwork. As long as the bill of sale is from the person who was last registered, it should be no problem. If it isn't, good luck. In any case, it's his problem. Don't make it yours.

Hey don't title the car in va, you will then have to pay property tax, sale tax, and then state tax. Florida doesn't pay property or state tax do they? Just thought you might keep that in mind. there are so many navy people in va (hampton roads area atleast) that they police won't stop you for outdated tags etc... pleanty of guys get off the boats and haven't been home for two years

You can go to a bonding company and have it bonded. (a couple of hundred depending on the value of teh vehicle.) then you can go and apply for a new title.

contact your local DMV, its a very common request among auction buyers.

I have done this on 3 different bikes, 4 cars and a boat. it is not that hard just alot of paperwork.
