I ran into this Friday coming home from work.

Let me set it up:
- You arrive at the store, park the bike (steering locked), dismount, remove gloves and helmet.
- As you grab your tank back, you head into the store, do your thing, come back.

Now you're standing next to your bike, helmet (with gloves inside) in one hand, and tank bag in the other (purchased item in the bag).

Question: how do you get on the bike? Try to be specific.

I tried a couple different things. What I found worked best was sitting the tank bag on the seat, put gloves on the seat and put the helmet on. Mounting the tank bag. Pick up gloves, sit down, unlock and start bike, and put on gloves.

For some reason, this whole process just seemed a tad combursome. I don't know how much could be changed, but then again, that's why I'm asking.

Thanks.

Oddly enough I go through this every day when I get to my bike at my parking garage after work. Here's the routine:

Walk up to the bike, set helmet (with gloves inside) on the seat, setting the magnetic tank bag on the tank at the same time. I then put my backpack over my other shoulder and cinch up the straps. Zip up my jacket then pull down on it to straighten up the fabric underneath the backpack. Pick up helmet, pull gloves out of helmet and set them on the seat, put on helmet, put on sunglasses, pull key out of pocket and place in ignition, put on gloves, mount bike, detach and reattach magnetic tank bag so that it is in the correct position. I then go through the normal start-up and ride off routine that the rest of us do. I realize this sounds quite cumbersome but since I do it every day it actually goes rather fast and is pretty much second nature. Occasionally if I am in a hurry I'll manage to get my backpack fully on before I get to the bike thus eliminating a step.

Thats what I do. Isnt that what the mirrors are for?

Specifically, I place my gloves inside my helmet, then place the helmet on the mirror with the gloves inbetween the helmet and mirror. This saves me from having to pick up my gloves when the wind would have blown them off the seat, and (theoretically) helps to protect the helmet liner. Once the bag is on then I set my gloves on top of the bag, put on the helmet, then the gloves.

My helmet fell off the seat twice after doing this. FZ6's seat is rounded and wasn't a good place for me to set a helmet.

So instead I now hang the helmet on the mirror or set it on the triple tree, visor facing back.

When it comes to gas stations, I don't take my helmet off-I walk around with my helmet still on my head while pumping gas and buying things at the convenient store.:squid

Hang the lid on the right morror stalk, or set it on the ground, the seat is BAD for helemts :) I toss my gloves in under the windshield, or just set em on the pillion. Everything else is just obvious. if it sits on the seat nicely, then it goes there, and if it doesn't, it goes to the ground.

When pumping gas, I never get off the bike. Have my card in my jacket pocket ready to grab and just pull up as close as I can. That way I only take off my gloves, pump and run.
I'll never do this after hearing of a guy who's foot slipped as he's reaching to put hose back. He fell over, the bike fell ontop of him, fuel spilled everywhere, the fuel hit the headers and caught on fire. The guy lived but was horribly burnt.

I've noticed a few servos which have signs up telling motorcyclists to dismount before filling up.

Interesting topic, i'll throw in my 2 cents although i've only been riding a few weeks.

So far my routine has been pretty basic, i walk out with my jacket on, or put jacket on as im walking out, I do not have a tank bag so with gloves in helmet i reach for the key, put in ignition, kick the bike into neutral and start the bike, giving it a chance to warm up a little and let the oil circulate as i remove gloves from helmet (which was set on the ground) put helmet on, mount bike, put gloves on and ride away.

Part of being a professional, is making "the work" flow smoothly and precisely... a dance with no stumbles. You've taken the first step... thinking about the steps that have to be done and wondering about how your align those steps to "flow". Keep thinking like that, and people start thinking you're a professional.

I always have my A* SPS gloves rolled up and in my A* jacket pockets along with my keys.

I always park my FZ6 with the column locked.

So then I rest the Shoei on the right passenger peg.

Put key in the ignition and start'er up.

Zip up my jacket and make sure helmet liner is tucked in (if the weather warrants).

Put on the Axio hard pack or secure the Fox tank bag.

Put the Shoei on.

Put on the SPSs.

Mount, kick stand back, drop it in 1st & get outta town.
