I'm looking to hear some feedback from your experiences with different gearing setups. My bike is used 95% street with the very occasional trip to the drag strip. I acquired the bike because one of my best friends was killed in a car accident and still owed on the bike. Instead of leaving the bills to his family I took them over. Because of the circumstances I chose to leave the bike the way my friend had it for sentimental reasons etc. Personally, I probably would have kept a stock ride height bike that I could use on the track instead of the 1/4 mile. It is what it is though and the only changes I've made were to the gearing of the bike. When I got it, it had -1 front +2 rear gearing and I made the switch to -2 front +3 rear gearing.

Specs:
02 Gsxr 1k
Full Yosh RC3
PCII
BMC filter
lowered 3"
-2,+3 gearing

I personally don't get my kicks from top speed, but rather the incredible feeling of acceleration. I absolutely love the change to that gearing and occasionally get the chance to ride a few different bikes including a similarly modded 02 1k with stock gearing. It is night and day difference, the stock geared bike seems incredibly slow compared to mine (we swap bikes and both agree) and side by side roll ons aren't even close, granted we probably let off before the top end differences can surface. I was just wondering what gearing some of you run and what your evaluations and comparisons of each are including track times and such. Also, has anyone went from a similar setup to one of the newer 05,06 liter bikes and what is the difference their? Thanks in advance for all replies

I don't have a gsx-r 1k, but I would be concerned about going down 2 on the front. The chain has a harder time rolling around a sprocket that small and will get stressed. How many teeth now on the front? Did you also go down in chain size (525 or 520)?

I would imagine you also have a hard time keeping the front wheel on the ground unless it's really lowered. :)

I'm not saying that his 1k is slow... it just feels slow after riding my bike. No matter how fast something is most people tend to get used to it. I remember the first time I rode this bike I thought it was ridiculous, but now I find myself hitting the rev-limiter a little more than I'd like to waiting for it to pull a little more. I'll have to go out and count the teeth but I wanna say it's 15 on the front. I do eat through chains a little more quickly then normal. No I didn't goto a smaller chain, although I can't say it wasn't done before I got the bike. In comparison to stock 1k it looks to be the same size. I think in 8k miles I've replaced it once and it's time again for new chain/sprockets. The bike can power wheelie in 3rd, but you have to give it a little tug to do so if you want to get up to balance point. First gear... forget it. If you're not super smooth and roll on it the bike tends to want to backflip (of course I have this down to a science now), hi rpm shifts to second immediately send the front skywards, although not uncontrollably. Just a nice steady loft through the rpms. In third, the front tire feels like its skips across the ground. 4th along with all the ladder gears pull hard but feel nice and planted. 16,100 miles now and it's time for a valve job. I could probably sell this bike and go pick up an 06 today, but this is one I'll keep for the rest of my life.
