I know the YZF600R used to be Yamaha's premier sportbike before the R6 took that spot, but what are the biggest differences between the FZ6 and the 600R based on performance, suspension, and handling? I know the 600R is a carbureted motor (even though that means absolutly nothing), but how do they stack up against each other in the present day?

Well just doing the bike comparo on yamaha-motor.ca there are a couple differences (other than the obvious visual differences)...

FZ6 has larger bore, shorter stroke (should be more rev happy).
FZ6 has slightly more compression.
YZF600R suspension is adjustable.
FZ6 has wider rear tire.
FZ6 is longer, wider, taller, with a lower seat height.
FZ6 is 13 pounds heavier.

I would imagine a straight line race would come down to gearing (given perfect riders). 600Rs suspension 'should' make it a better track bike but I don't know if the FZ6 geometry is that much more updated.

Insert personal thoughts here: I think the single front headlight on the 600R looks extremely dated. Even though it the 600R has full fairings I find the FZ6 a much more modern, aggressive looking bike. If I was looking for a supersport bike I'd probably go with the R6S instead of the 600R although I used to really want a 600R. It's just too dated if you ask me, I'm surprised Yamaha still sells 3 generations of 600cc supersports.

Hope this helps,

Aaron

Ooppps, My bad, I thought that we were taking about the YZF-R6, I am sorry, I confused them, Yeap my former manager had one of those and that shit looks old already, He sold it and got a R6 now. Although the 600 marks up 180mph, Uhm?, I do not know about that, anyway, at 125 mph, our fz6 is happy, I got it up 145mph and felt a kick for power, at that moment shit was spraying out of my seat, speed=the velocity that your brain can process stuff, I felt that over 145mph I was too scare to keep procesing shit...
That's just me, by the way the 600r is a bit heavier, too me, I sat on it and I was comfortable reaching the ground, toe tipping, not good for a skiny dude like me.

The 600R has a more adjustable suspension, and a slightly more agressive riding position. The FZ-6 has Fuel Injection, and newer technology.

Yamaha FZ-6
0-60 = 3.4 seconds
1/4 mi = 11.3 seconds

Yamaha YZF600R
0-60 = 4.1 seconds
1/4 mi = 12.1 seconds

Motorcyclist Magazine has these numbers for the FZ-6
Yamaha FZ-6
1/4 mile: 11.30 sec.
0-60 mph: 3.44 sec.

In addition, in their test of the FZ-6 vs. Honda 599 MCN said:
"The FZ-6 offers an unprecedented combination of class leading power, additional features, long term comfort, and value that wins this comparison."

Raced a 600 and beat it. My friend used to own one before he got his gsxr, it's definatly a fun bike to ride but I dont like it's fairing style, I'll take the fazer for 500 bob.

The 600R came out way back in the mid- 90's and has not been changed much. Not too much difference from a mid-90's 600R and a 2006 model. Another bike that is very comparable to it is the Honda CBR 600F3 (in Europe I think it's called the 600F and the one with round air intakes), although, having ridden all three (FZ6, 600R, F3) I think the F3 is a better SPORTS bike. Honda, unlike Yamaha, updated their model somewhat and I believe the F4i is their latest in the series(?)

If you decide to get a 600R, go with a good used. Those can be had for a REAL bargain.

The 600R and FZ6 don't really compare well. One can be a track bike with full suspension dialing and the other is, well, call it either a standard or sports-touring, it does everything, but nothing really well. I had a harder time at track day with the FZ6 than with the F3, and while not ridden the 600R at the track, can see myself able to ride through with it easier than the FZ6. Not saying you can't get good on the track with an FZ, it just has a little steeper learning curve.

I guess that's how Yamaha is still able to sell the 600R for almost 10 years.

Performance Numbers from a 2002 Sport Rider test of the then-current R6 with a YZF600R:

Yamaha YZF600R 11.29 @ 120.47 Yamaha YZF600R 5.19 sec.
Yamaha YZF-R6 10.80 @ 128.04 Yamaha YZF-R6 4.36 sec.

Top Speed Roll-On, 80-100 mph
Yamaha YZF600R 152 mph Yamaha YZF600R 5.25 sec.
Yamaha YZF-R6 157 mph Yamaha YZF-R6 4.45 sec.

You're right ... 600R has fully adjustable suspension ... it dyno'd at 88.7 at the rear, with the R6 at 95, but the 600R had far more midrange, up to 10hp more at some points.

As far as the single headlamp, well, looks are a personal preference. Does the new R6 and the R6S look more aggressive ... yup. Seems the 600R has turned into a sport tourer, but what's so wrong with that???

I'm not going to buy a 600R...I was just curious how they compared. My cousin just bought one and I don't know anything about them, so i figured I'd throw it out there. Thanks to all who replied.

That now makes 6 Yamaha's and 2 Honda's on my dad's side of the family.

I prefer the FZ6 over the 600R just because of the way it rides and feels. Believe me when I say that if you are any taller than 6 feet tall you will want the FZ6. A friend of mine owns a black 600R and he is close to 6'4"! :lao He curses the purchase everytime we ride any longer than 30 minutes.

No problem ... I've been thinking of getting either one ... the 600R seems much more comfortable to me, and personally, all the extra speed means nothing when you're dead-stopped on I-75 trying to get out of Detroit.
