Fry Fuel Saw this last night on MythBusters so I decided to do some research on it. Here is one of the articles I found about it on MSN NBC.
ON MythBusters they really got a car to run on this stuff. It was really interesting. I'll try to find a good link to the MytBusters episode to go with this.

Fryer oil can be filtered and run directly through a diesel engine. The only challenge to operators is in keeping the stuff from congealing in colder weather. It can also be filtered and treated (with a small system which anyone can put in his/her garage) and used as normal diesel fuel (ie no worries about congealing). Cool stuff.

Of course, I just watched a news clip which covered some dude who has figured out how to turn water (H2O) into gas (HHO) which can power a vehicle. He has his own personal car converted and he stated that he can travel 100 miles on 4 oz. of water...

I saw Mythbusters run a car on pure Hydrogen...until the engine almost exploded! LOL I tink they tried the HHO/H2O ting and couldn't get it to work. I'll have to do some research on that too.

They sell conversion kits for diesel Volkswagons. The way gas prices are now, it seems like a very sound investment.

I know of 1 car on island that runs on veggie oil. He pays next to nothing for used veggie oil in which he refines for use in his car.

There is? That would be cool to see.

This topic comes up alot at work. One guy when he moves back to the Mainland wants to convert a diesel into doing this. I think it's great and we get rid of a by-product in probably a more environmental way.

Driving your car around with canisters of hydrogen can work, but it turns your car into a driving bomb should you ever wreck.
Uh, no. This is the very reason that hydrogen-based transportation has been so slow to catch on. Everyone remembers the Hindenburg.

Hydrogen is a great fuel. It's main problem is storing it. See that white vapor pouring out of the shuttle before launch? Thats oxygen and hydrogen. Its near impossible to store Hydrogen in any decent quanity without it being in liquid form. Keeping it liquid requires about 40,000 psi pressure so the storage container would weigh twice that of the car itself.

Running a engine on water is the way to go, you have the perfect fuel right there. 1 molecuele hydrogen 2 oxygen mix the two and woah!!! Perfect clean combustion (very explosive)

On the shuttle they cannot afford the tons of extra weight so they store Oxy and Hydrogen in liquid form but allow it to "boil" once in space its cold enough that it will no longer boil and venting isnt needed.

btw water engines have been around since the late 1800's. Thank the greedy oil shitheads from letting us have perfect clean propulsion. :upyours

I hate to refer back to the dang show again but when I watched all they did was run the french fry oil through a filter prior to putting it in the car. They used a mercedes benz. It was totally cool. I'd love to be able to do something like that. I wonder what kind of fumes come from that.

Ankle, diesals will run on any form of oil as long as its free from solids or water. If it can be injected into the cylinders it will run.

AH so...well Obviously this is NOT my area of expertise. I still find it completely fascinating. I really need to do some major reading and bone up on engines. Engines remind me so much of the human body and both are equally interesting!! :cheers

If you guys want, my friend that runs the machine shop at school has the conversion done on his VW rabbit.

Basically, you have another fuel tank for the grease, and a filter to filter it, the filter is under the hood. Then there's a switch inside the car to select which tank to run off of. He just fills it up at a restaurant and it automatically filters it. You just change the trap periodically and you're good to go!

You DO have to start the car using diesel, and also run it for a minute before you turn it off on diesel, to keep the injectors clean. But other than that, you can change while it's running.

Like i said, if anyone's interested, i'll gladly get pictures and stuff. I'll have to set up an appointment with him next week. The both of us have been busy as hell.

SWEET stuff, though!!

LOL, the exhaust fumes i'm not sure about. But i can't be around when he's working under the hood, or i get hungry as HELL. It smells JUST like fries! It's awesome!

And video, i dont know about. Maybe. But pictures and stuff i can do.

I'll look into video, though. My school has tons of equipment... i'm just really really really busy the next couple weeks... i actually have to film a 12 minute horror film that i wrote.... (at an engineering school :rolleyes )

HEYYYY Post up the horror movie too!! LOL :eek:nfloor
I bet it does smell like food under the hood. Well there is no hurry about the pics or what not. When ever you have the time would be fine by me. I would love to see under the hood and see where he puts the oil etc. Basically whatever the conversion is.
Thanks Kevin!! :cheers

I'd post up the horror movie, but i just wrote the script. I dont have time to be one of the actors. And sadly, i'm one of the few engineers on the planet with acting experience. So i'm afraid it may suck. But it will be well written. :)

And yeah- sometime next week expect something out of me. But not too much. I have to put my bike back together. Er, well- just together, not back. Because it's never been together before. But i need to do this before i permanantly leave the state. So i get to juggle things. GOODY!!

The military has had "multi fuel" engines for 60+ years at least.

You'd be suprised how similar engines are to the human body.... just built using differing materials. They both have intake, fuel and waste output, temp control cooling yada yada... :)
