I have 5000 mi. on my FZ and after a ride today noticed some grease and dirt on the front axle by the hub. I wiped it off and it looks like the seal might be leaking a bit.

Any body else have this problem, or another diagnosis?

I'd say it's normal unless it happens again. Axles have a way of getting rid of excess grease. Just keep an eye on it.

+1 mine did the same thing. 15,000 on her now, hasn't done it again.
