So a while back a guy i used to work with was brought up on charges of having sex with a minor. While i agree that it was wrong, and he should be punished, i dont agree with 66 months.

Maybe its different for me because i know both him and the alleged "victim". Once again, i want to stress that it was not right of him to do what he did.

I am familiar with this girl. This incident happened over 4 years ago, and the "victim" was more than willing. The "victim" participated in the weekend work release program and was working at the police department. The incident happened at a gym where SHE MET HIM. I have personally been in Wal Mart where the "victim's" mother works, and on several occasions she has said to Jody that he should meet her daughter.

I was at the sentencing yesterday, and the "victim" stood up to speak. She said she wanted to see him punished because what he did was wrong and that she has had to live with this for the past several years, the past several years where she has said nothing about it.

I just dont think its fair that the minor can engage in these acts, yet the adult is the only one to be punished. Again, i do not agree with what he did, but it seems so wrong that at one time, the so called "victim" did exactly what she wanted, on her own free will, and now decides to turn it around. She was a willing participant, and she gets to go on with her life as though everything is fine.

AGAIN, I DO NOT AGREE WITH WHAT HE DID, i just needed to vent. Even though he was wrong, it kills me to see a friend and his family, and even worse, his children, having to go through this.

I know it wont be possible for everyone, but please refrain from the "oh hes a piece of crap" type comments. Everyone screws up and makes mistakes, some worse than others.

This is the part of this that concerns me the most. When you say she was in the weekend work release program, does this mean that she was serving time for something?? Either in juvenile detention or an adult jail??

You've got to be kidding me. A 41 year old has sex with a 16 year old and he ONLY gets 5.5 years and 9 and a half of probation? He got off easy because he was an ex-deputy. If hes a damn ex-LEO then he should know what is acceptable and what isnt acceptable. The justice system for minors who engage in underage sex is to protect them from their poor decisions. What business does a 41 year old man have with a 16 year old girl? He deserved every bit of his punishment, and it scares me that you think he doesnt.

Edit: It doesnt matter whether you think hes a great guy or not. He broke a very powerful law and needs to be punished. One of my professors was in corrections for 30 years and will tell you straight up that child molesters are some of the nicest people that hes ever worked with. Not a joke.

I'm guessing (not 100% sure because he hasn't responded yet) that the girl must have been in some kind of correctional situation. I say this because she was on work release.

If she was in fact in some kind of correctional situation, then I find the act to be even that much more disgusting. The guy at that point used his position of authority to help him take advantage of the girl. If she's only 16, it's entirely possible that she thought that having sex with a cop could somehow help her situation with the work release and such.

Of course, if she wasn't in some kind of correctional situation, then my opinion is still that the guy was 100% in the wrong...but I just find it even more horrid that he may have used his position as a LEO to take advantage of a girl that was involved in some form of corrections.

Even still, none of this is an excuse for what was done, but just like anything else the media can report whatever they want and make things look ten times worse.

I think the guy got off a bit lucky in this situation. He used his position of authority to take advantage of a 16 year old girl that obviously has some other types of issues going on in her life. It's highly possible she thought she didn't have much of a choice other than to have sex with a police officer. It's also possible that he could have told her things like if she didn't do it he'd make sure she'd go to jail.

Hahaha, i should have known that question was coming! I know people who went to school with her, and i was also a resource officer for a short time. As for his punishment, thats a hard thing to say. Its easier for someone like me to be more leanient because i know him.

Another thing that bothers me, is all this talk about him taking advantage of her. As i stated, word around school is that she wasnt hard to get in bed, and i was present when her mother all but pimped her out to Jody one night.

I have known Jody for about 4 years, and he had no problem finding women. Do i believe he slept with her, yes, do i believe he threatened her with her probation being revoked, not a chance.

Not sure about Vegas, but it is legal in PA. One can nail a 16 year old in PA and be fine; drive down the road a few miles to NY and it is a felony. Are girls in PA cognitively superior to girls in NY? Why is she a child in one state, and a consenting adult in another? A 16 year old girl with a 41 year old man is quite a jump, but what if she was 18 and he was 43; would anyone have an issue with that? Mala prohibida v. mala in se, at what point is the line drawn morally?

What I find disturbing is not so much the act in itself, as this would be legal in some states; it is the implied power differential. Her motivation was most likely selfish, assuming that sleeping with a cop would get her out of her obligations/punishment. On that assumption, age has little bearing on the situation; I would venture to guess that women twice her age would also make the same assumption.

That is a very harsh sentence. If reported accurately, at least. I would think probation was a proper sentence without it being a forcible rape. He'll have lost his job, probably pension too, and register as a sex offender for life. Those are huge extra-judicial punishments. Now if you are a loser with no job and prior offenses, then 5 years might be right. On the other hand, for an otherwise exemplary guy who bangs some teenage skank, no way.

Not entirely correct. In PA you can sleep with a 16 year old as long as you are not more then 4 years her senior. At 18 she can do anyone she wants.
