So I am applying for a job and they need (2) copies of my credit report.

I went to FreeCreditReport.com | Free Credit Report and Credit Score Online by Experian and registered on Experian and Equifax, but I don't think they actually mail you a "hard copy".

The place I am applying to needs hard copies because people have faked the internet copies before. :rolleyes

Anyways, anyone have any solutions for me so I don't have to man up and pay $10+?

I checked with both of my banks, but it was a no go.

FreeCreditReport.com is a scam, and has been for several years now.

I signed up to check mine back in like 2003 or so, and at the time they didn't have the nice funny commercials they do now. They sign you up for the credit monitoring service, and you have to call and cancel. Thats all fine and everything, I understand that.

The problem is when you call for the 63rd time trying to cancel the service, and they just won't do it.

There was a whole shitstorm about it a few years ago, which is what prompted them to change to the commercials with the singing guy, and now it specifically mentions the 'triple advantage' service. Still no word though on whether or not its possible to cancel that service. I ended up just canceling my credit card over the ordeal.

Why does an employer need your credit report? And if they do, why can't they run it themselves??

This would be setting off red (well, yellow) flags for me right off the bat.

You're paying money to *apply* to work for them?

KeS
It's for a LEO job.

A credit report is sort of essential in that they want to see how much debt you have and if you'd be willing to take bribes.

Tell me about it. Me and my broke @$$.
I know this is a hard thing to hear when you're 23 and trying to get started, but there are some places where you don't want to work. This is one of them.

I'm stunned that any actual department or agency would even allow you to bring in your own credit report, because it would be incredibly easy for you to forge one and cover up the bad stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if you told me this was for some kind of private security company. They do sleazy shit all the time, but the rule above still applies. Any place that cheap when you're applying is going to screw you later on pay and benefits if you do get the job, and they're reputation is going to be so shitty having it on your resume won't help you get a job with a real department or even a better security company.

I would be leary of an employer wanting me to supply my own credit report. They should be checking that with your background check.

Either way the best way to get paper copies is to send a written request to each bureau. Here are the addresses: Contact Information for Trans Union, Experian, and Equifax Credit Bureaus | SPENDonLIFE

I am a pen and paper girl and don't like the upselling the burueaus do through annualcreditreport.com

If it's a REAL Law Enforcement job (not security) THEY would run your credit. You'd sign a paper giving them the right to do it, and they would use their department's online access to Equifax (the main credit bureau that Govt agencies use to get credit histories) to access your current credit report.

If you want actual hard copies, simply google the phone numbers for the three credit bureaus, call them (it's an automated 800 number). When prompted simply press the option "You've been turned down for credit in the last 30/90 days" and they will send you an actual hard copy free of charge.

I can see where some of you are coming from, but this is not at all some shady, or private security company.

I will not tell you who it is, but they are pretty well renowned and have a good standing reputation.

My mother worked for the same organizations years upon years ago.

All is well.
