If you get 'financing' from the dealer, it's my understanding that they don't require full insurance, mostly because their financing is basically a credit card with crappy interest. But if you're getting a loan from the bank or something, you're supposed to have full coverage on it in case of accident/theft.

How can you get insurance on a bike that you don't have?
Get the VIN number of the bike you're going to buy and call your insurance company. Here in PA proof of insurance (and now usually it has to be for the car/bike you are buying specifically, not just proof of insurance for your other vehicles) is required when transfering the title. May be different at dealers, but when doing private party sales at the tags place, it's required. Also, here in PA, you are required to have your actual insurance card, not a temporary one.

In CA if you have insurance on one vehicle (say your '03 rr) and get a new one (say that '06 rr) and intend on getting rid of the old one on that policy, the insurance company will cover the new vehicle automatically for about a week. Call your agent to make sure. You then have to tell the insurance company about the new vehicle, pay the difference in premiums, and get rid of the old vehicle within 30 days (I think).

If you arrange financing through the dealer, they will ask to see your current insurance card. If you ride the bike off their lot even if you pay cash, they are supposed to see proof of insurance.

If your financing requires you to have insurance you have 30 days to obtain it. Up until that point their insurance will cover it. It will NOT cover any damage you do to someone elses property though, so get insurance.

Also, most states don't require insurance on motorcycles... Something about the ratio of extreme property damage to fatal accidents being very high or something...

I think most states DO require insurance on motorcycles. CA does anyway in the same vain as minimum liability coverage required to register any vehicle.

Is the 10k figure from the dealer for financing a bike? Not sure where you're going with all this. If you're worried about getting a bike off the dealer's lot and paying cash, that's one issue. If you're financing through the dealer, that may be another. If you're worried about insurance for riding the bike on public streets, the answer is YES.

WA does not, neither does FL or AR. I'm fairly certain that ID and OR don't as well..

The 10k he's talking about is the financing limit that the lenders the dealer work with most often have set for the minimum amount where insurance would be required. If you finance under 10k then the lender won't require it, if you go over they will. This has nothing to do with state/local laws or plain old common sense.

But again, many states do not require insurance on motorcycles...

According to:

Arkansas, Oregon, and Idaho do require insurance. And Florida's financial responsibility law does apply to motorcycles.
