I'm not going to give you a 100% factual answer but more my opinion. I have an Arai, and it is a size large. I tried on the new x-11 at a shop, size large and it felt a little smaller but not very much if any at all, probably just my head shape. Like I said, I have a large Arai and if I got the Shoei I would get the same size. I think it may be a little smaller, but very little and was probably just the shape of my head that made it feel that way. Arai's site says large is for 59-60cm, and Shoei's says large is for 59-60. So they are supposed to be the same size.

Nononono!! Arai has what like 7 different head shapes. You should be able to find an arai that fits. The rx-7 wasnt even close to my headshape but the signet(I think it was, outa stock in my size @ the store I went too or I would of bought it) fit sooo well when I tried it previously.

Here's a chart, and the answer is apparently, No. They don't use the same sizing structure:

http://www.brocktoncycle.com/images/brocktoncycle/motorcyclehelmet_size_chart.html

Here's another chart that has Shoei and others to compare:

http://www.helmetharbor.com/sizing/sizing_chart.htm

They both have mmodels that fit better for specific headshapes:

Arai--Quantum=Round, Astral=Round, Profile=Oval, Corsair=Intermediate

Shoei differnces are perhaps less pronounced, but--

RF1000=round, X-11=intermeidate/oval, TZR=intermediate/oval

Here's some shape and sizing info from Arai:

http://www.araiamericas.com/shell-shape.html

http://www.araiamericas.com/size_sel.html

http://www.araiamericas.com/comparison.html

http://www.araiamericas.com/int_pads.html

All of that is just a guide, and not set in stone as your facial structure can change the feel, and you can have a more egg-shaped or earth-shaped cranium, and swapping cheek pads can have an affect on proper fit. The store that sells Arai should be trainied in proper fit and be able to tell you what to look for in that regard. If not, go somewhere else, and try on as many options as possible.

Where are you looking at them on the internet? I'm trying to find a good deal a Astral X blue/black in XL.

You're not going to find an advertized deal on them or the Shoeis anywhere on the net through an authorzied dealer. Arai currently won't allow internet sales, and they both won't allow anything less than minimum adevertized pricing. The only place you may find a "deal" is on Ebay. You have to be very careful with Ebay sales, there has reprotedly been fakes a while back as well as the helmets may not be DOT or Snell spec, if they are an asian market model. The headshapes change for the market region as well. The headshapes listed for the American models on the Arai Amercias site may not coincide with other market versions. Arai contends that headshape is of enough importance that you should be properly fitted for one which also considers the thickness of the cheekpads along with proper positioning on the head.

I did. It was fine. But there are a lot of sketchy helmets there. Be careful and don't take anything for granted.
If you're not sure of the sizing or shape consdierations, or the market it was intended for sale in, or of the authenticity, it's probably not a good idea, but you certainly want to be sure all of that is specified in the auction or verified at some point and sure of proper fit. It's pretty much like buying a pair of shoes or jeans, only typically more expensive.

forget what I said earlier... I know nothing
Forget about which helmet fits what type head, or about you being asian? Oh well.....I better just plain forget it ALL before I get confused (which is a terribly easy thing to do).

I shopped for helmets since the beginning of the year, and there is no way I would buy a helmet before I have tried that same brand/model of helmet. I live in south Colo., and I shopped here in town....then drove 70 miles to Denver a FEW times just to go shopping for helmets and trying them on. Each brand has not only different sizing compared to another brand, but there is the head shape. The most important thing about a helmet is how it fits your melon. I wanted an AGV......but I couldn't find anywhere to try one on. When I finally did....it was somebody else's helmet. But I had to see how it felt on my noggin. They let me try it out....and once I had the feel for it, and figured that it would work (luckily, he has the same size head as me) and liked how it felt on my head, then I ordered the one I wanted. I am so happy that I tried it on before spending $$ on one that would have been the wrong size for my head. XL fits me with Arai & Icon, L on Shoei & AGV.

It's your money....but for me, I made damn sure that it's gonna work for fit, comfort, features, weight, etc. before I blow $250+ on a brain bucket.

Just my 2 cents..... :beer
