So I'm looking for a new sportbike. I'm not brand loyal to anyone. I was thinking about the 08 1000RR because of the low weight and the low end torque from the 1000cc's. It looked good till a lot of issues started popping up from several different countries. They are the same issues though so there must be some validity to the stories.

Burns excessive oil (reported in several magazines and on several websites)(they changed a piston ring in the 09 model), widespread clutch recall, False neutral 5-6, popping out of first at low throttle low speeds, tabs on the lower's are fragile and break too easily, and spark plugs are pain to change.
Numbing vibrations from the exhaust feeding the foot pegs while cruising at around 3000.

So what's a good Japanese sportbike to ride on the street? Low weight, high torque, and doesn't have to spin to the moon to cruise at 80 on the freeway?
A good amount of reliability would also be a big bonus.

On one hand, I could overlook a lot of flaws to pick up a 1000RR at the prices they are selling at these days. On the other hand, I think a GSX-R750 is probably the perfect sportbike, size-wise.

I strongly agree with you on both accounts. It's too bad Suzuki doesn't have any competition in that range.
Closest thing to competition would be the daytona 675 - also a "good" sportbike for the street. More usable power due to the three cylinders.

Yea, when I hear "do it all" sportbike, I immediately look beyond the "R" bikes - CBR, ZX#R, R#, GSXR... They really are race bikes, not street bikes.

To the OP, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's the exact reason I bought, and have used, my Busa. For what you give up in agility (which in reality isn't much), you gain in literally every other area. You said you wanted a lighter bike, but lighter doesn't make a better street bike. A little extra weight and wheelbase makes a bike far more stable cruising down the freeway at 80mph. And a larger engine lets you cruise at a nice relaxed RPM, I think my Busa is barely turning 4000 RPM at 80mph, and I still have plenty of torque to accelerate.

To me, an all around, do it all sportbike for the street would be:

VFR
Busa
ZX14
SV or FZ if adamant about a lighter bike.

A friend has a GSXR1000 running a sargent seat and LSL handlebar conversion on an otherwise stock bike. I would ride that bike anywhere and easily 500 miles a day.

correction: he crashed and totaled the machine a few months ago on the blue ridge. (not the fault of th machine) so no pics to be had.

Suzuki GSF600/650/1250 Bandit, Honda Hornet/599 - 919, Yamaha FZ1/6, Suzuki SV650/1000/Gladius also the Suzuki TU250. And you got the Kawasaki Versys, EX500, EX250, ER6N, et cetera ...

I could go on and on.

There is no "perfect" bike for all conditions.

If you want it to be light and have a ton of power, you may give up points in other categories. If you want the ergos to be comfy, and have good street manners, you may give up in others...

What is that saying..

"Jack of all trades and master of none..."

Something like that.

SV1000 and the bandit (GSF1200) are both good bikes. both have plenty of useable power. The bandit is really comfy, but the SV handles better. Both bikes pull pretty hard for touring bikes, but proformance goes to the SV. I am also fond of the FZ6 as well.
