Has anyone seen this? This company makes kits to convert MX bikes to road bikes - keeps the engine, frame and major components. They make kits for all the major manufacturers:

Vehicles - 450GP.com

Too bad the price is so high between the bike and the kit, because it looks pretty damn cool.

Convert this:

Note that this is *not* to convert to a *street* bike; it's for track use only. They are trying to get this established as a new race series for people more-or-less beginning their roadracing careers, to replace current smallbore 2-stroke classes. If they succeed in getting the series started, then this will be how you build a bike to race in it. If not, then this is essentially a useless object.

I don't know about useless, depending on what state you live in it can be fairly easy to plate a dirt bike. My 97 YZ250 supermoto is plated in KY and the bike has been since new. I know several guys who have plated CRF's, and YZ/WR's in both KY and OH.

One of those conversions might be a lot of fun.

Fun, sure. But for the cost of the bike + the kit, that's a lot of dosh. And then you'd still have to fit it with lights and road equipment, and wrestle with your DMV to put it on the road. Or just have a very expensive medium-fast track bike.

You could convert the dirtbike to a street-legal supermotard for a lot less money and have just as much fun in the twisties, or you could trick out an SV650 for a lot less for track usage, or buy a full sportbike and have a lot more performance.

Without the racing series, I just don't see this as being worth it to very many people.

Sport Rider or Motorcyclist, I forget who, did an article on those a few months back. Look like a hell of a lot of fun, though, like everything else that's fun, is expensive. It would be cool to have for a trackbike since hardly anyone has one.

The kit is 4200 Euros, which is about $6200. Of course, that's on top of the cost of the bike, but you can get them used at a decent price. The 8000 euro ($11,000) price was for a full bike - already converted. Still pretty expensive.

There is a guy over on the wera board that races a CR450 motor in an old Hawk GT chassis. The conversion seemed pretty straightforward. Other posts show bikes with CBR9__ inverted forks and other chassis mods.

This may be a cheap way to do a 450? Personally I think an XR650 motor would be perfect for a built Hawk frame.

I looked into doing my YZ250 2 stroke using the forks and rear wheel off of a YZF600 and bodywork from a late model SV650 that I had laying around. It looked fairly easy but I lost interest when more of my riding buddies started riding off road again.

I think the idea is to get a 450 Singles class going for a relatively inexpensive platform to start with. 450's make decent power, are pretty reliable, there are a ton of them out there. And they are light. I think it will take off.

DMG wants these as one of their next up-and-coming classes.

It's not getting much support from the race teams.

Price needs to be lower in order to gain any kind of following, which wont happen due to their probable insufficient funds from just starting the business. Its awesome, sure, but im agreeing with most ppl saying it is essentially useless

i wonder how hard it would be to put a 450 engine in a 250 ninja??
To get the engine to fit probably not very hard at all 250 parallel twin vs 450 single. To get the budget frame brakes and suspension to cope with the extra horses that will cost.

The kit looks like it got some very high end bits in it (wheels etc) you get what you pay for there is a 450 class run in the UK which produces some pretty good racing designed to replace the 250 proddy class as you can't buy a 250 proddy bike anymore (RGV250 NSR 250 RS250 etc etc) and stepping up to the GP class machines takes propper money ie not the chump change they want for this kit.
