I asked this in the FZ-6 forum, but figure I will toss it out to all the other exp people on here for their opinion. ** Remember the FZ-6 is basically an R6, well the engine.**

I have lots of anodized bolts all over my bike, and was finishing up a few areas with some bolts...

I never even got to the torque value of 8 pounds on this last one, and it snapped. It snapped wayyy down at the bottom, not near the head which is the spot they usually snap if they snap. (Bolt that snapped is the one with arrow pointing)

I tried easy outs and reverse thread drill bits to get it out, to no avail. The aluminum bolt just sort of melted in there.

So I removed that part to get at it better, and with the help of some nice people we were able to actually recut the threads back in with the old steel bolt, and a tap.

Everything went back together very nicely, torqued to its proper spec, started it up, no leaks everything seemed great....

Then it overheated!! (I was not sure it had overheated at first, since after we turned it off I saw the temp gauge go all the way to the top, and sometimes that does happen) Sooo I gave it about a 1/2 hour started it up again, and took it for a small ride...

Temp gauge during the ride went right back up to max!! Ah!!!

Sooo, the bike will have to be trailered now to figure out what the heck could have happened. (It is as if no water is flowing)

I am SUPER ANAL about my things, and take un-real care of them. I am absoultely frantic right now... Do you think I may have damaged the engine at all?? Or even the impeller??

Thanks for any help.

(The consensus so far is that basically I just got air in the coolant system, and if I run the engine with the radiator cap off, and refill the coolant I lost... all will be ok)

Try the suggestion first, how much money have you spent to do that? A little to none? Sure as shit beats the rates the stealership will charge you to fix the problem.

I too concur with the advice you've received so far regarding possible air in the lines.
Snapping a bolt off and even the tapping/rethreading should not have caused any cooling problems unless you managed to get a piece of metal into the cooling system which has caused other damage. You'd likely have heard noise if the water pump was damaged physically, however.

Your owners manual says how to change the coolant, including how to bleed it afterwards. It will tell you if you have any extra bleed points apart from just the radiator. The TL has one on the water pump itself (maybe that's 3 on that diagram? strange, I wouldn't expect a hose).

yea sounds like you need to burp your system...

Air lock is possible, also, check the level of your coolant while your bike is running. (before it overheats)(check the overflow bottle) you may just need to top up your coolant, as not having enough coolant will also lead to overheating.

All the best.

Do not know. The gauge is a bar type. 5 bars, 5 being the max and then it flashes. I hit 5 once and saw the flash then shut down.

Everyone I have spoken to as told me the engine will be just fine. Tonight I have a nice friend coming by who will help me "burp" the system, and then I shall know if all is otay.

We know I removed about 4 cups of coolant, and the bike holds a total of 8 cups.
