So I'm studying criminal justice at KSU and I'm planning on becoming a cop, I know I don't need a B.S. degree but I plan on going up the ranks. And I'll be looking out for you motorcyclers :p
Hope I can get my bike soon!

Xencer,

Take this for what it's worth. A stranger on the internet. On a MC forum no less. Just retired with over 30 years in LE. But a major in CJ is not the way to go for LE. Business and a number of others would be a smarter move. A degree in CJ is certainly better than no degree but it should be a minor if you feel you must keep it.
As far as riding in the motor unit. You might need to know that riding is really a small part of the job. The members of the motor unit were basically s**t on quite often. Schedules would change at last minute to accomodate special events that always seemed to pop up. Motor officers are expected to produce and are assigned problem areas to run radar and watch stop signs and such. Quotas are a no no where I'm from but writing tickets from a motor officer was highly expected.

Why dont you be a motorcycle cop that seams like it would be fun. Ridding and getting payed for it hell ya.
HA. Not a chance in hell would that be fun. I saw motorcycle cops struggle like shit this summer with raging 100+ degree temperatures. If your idea of fun is being out in weather like that for a 12 hour shift, then by all means, pursue it.

Cops have a licence to steal and they don't even need a gun. The cost of tickets is rediculous
You know you really don't need to post that twice, not to mention it makes you look like a total idiot in a thread like this.

+1

I think more then anything, they want someone who is well rounded and who has life experience but not too much of it, if you know what I mean.

Good luck on the career....it is my chosen path and I am happy I chose it. I earned my bachelors in criminology and am now working on my masters....but would agree with the above poster who recommended to get a major in something different. As you stated a degree is not required....and if you have any type of degree in any major it will be a plus and allow you to rise through the ranks. Then when you quit/get fired/retire you will have a completely different type of work waiting for you. I would say only about 40% of officers who start actually retired after 20-25 years. They either find its not for them, get burnt out, fired, or who knows what....then what is there to do with a Criminolgoy degree? Just something to think about.

You should really get your Bachelor's.

Itll make things look that much better on your resume, and could quite possibly be the difference between getting the job and not getting the job. I.e. - you and another man are contenders for the job, yet he has a Bachelor's degree and you dont. Who do you think theyre going to hire? Not all the time, but just saying.

Well I didn't want to be a cop just to go out on patrols. And I have thought about a business degree, but that really turned me off, unless it was in administration and then theres no way I could become some top guy in a company. Recently I have thought of being a massage therapist. My brother recommended I study medicine and that I would be good at it, and I'm naturally good at giving massages! Heh, so I'll take an anatomy class and see how it goes. But I really don't want to have to get my MD or PhD...

No, it makes sense. After you arrest someone, they feel really stressed out, right? You can sit in the back of the cruiser, giving them a massage, trying to work that tension of maybe spending the rest of your life in prison out.

And yet you can choose to not pay by simply not breaking laws. Weird. Almost as if it's a fine and not theft.
