So this weekend my girl and I went to dinner with some friends and I seized the opportunity to take my bike and let her take the cage.

So I am on Hwy 52W here in San Diego and it is a nice stretch where you can really open it up. I however, am just cruising at about 80 mph (standard speed in CA) in the fast lane...this ricer in a tricked out Scion XB is riding my ass and I decide to get out of the way so I roll on up to about 110 to put some distance between us and get over into the #2 lane. Now the scion is gone and I am still carrying about 90 mph speed to stay away from him...a CHP officer flies up next to me in the #1 lane looks over, gives me a slow down sign...I nod...he throws a thumbs up and speeds off ahead. On the same ride on I-15 N I had a bike CHP guy actually waive at me...I waive at all bike officers and none of them ever waive back. WTF is going on? Is the CHP suddenly cool or what? Ha ha :)

You are one lucky dude. Wish we had cops like that here instead of the majority being egotisitical maniacs, don't get me wrong not all but most. They have nothing to do here due to its suburban nature and we have the most tickets per capita of the 5 boroughs in NYC. Here they will watch your bike when you go in to a store and demand liscence, registration and proof of insurance when you walk up 2 it. Happens at least twice a month sometimes several times a week. I asked the cop once being a jerk off "what is this is the only way that slow pos car of yours can catch us for some random equipment ticket" cop anwsered with a straight face."Yes,we don't stand a chance" That's probably why they have such a hard on for bikes here cause they can never actually get em due to the Staten Island having every highway connected to a bridge leading out of state or off the island and labyrinths of side streets due to over development. :fiddy

Most moto CHP officers around here wave back. Some wave first.

You were lucky that the cruiser seemed to have somewhere to go. 85 seems to be a threshold for negative interest on their part. I've found most CHP are pretty cool and only go after the really blatant drivers. Our freeways and highways are a target-rich environment. :)

Agreed...we do have a "target-rich environment"...I wasn't even tucked in much or anything so I wasn't over 110 for more than a couple seconds. It was more of a blast up to speed to get away. at 90 mph indicated, I am sure I was more like 80-85...

CHP bike cops have all been cool with me. I even rode in formation with 2 of them in the HOV lane. Thumbs up all around.

I've started carrying a few Dunkin' Munchkins in my tankbag. If I ever get the cops hot on my tail, I just lob a few of these donuts over my shoulder. It throws 'em off my trail. You just have to be careful not to get any stuck in your bungee net, cause then it's over-they'll be on you like white on rice. :beer

maybe they don't wave because you ought to know which wave is the right wave.

He probably saw you trying to ditch the Scion guy. I'm hoping most cops could assess that situation and saw it was safer for you to get out of the way rather than stay where you were.

I was assuming the same thing...

Then he sped off ahead to prove that he can speed and I cant. :eek:nfloor

When crossing the bridge over I-30 in Fort Worth heading into Arlington, TX one morning, I saw a cop on the overpass clocking cars going East (toward Dallas) on 30. I continued, and there were approximately twenty motorcycle cops on the Eastbound I-30 ramp getting ready to get speeders - I think in Georgia they call these "Wolf Packs" - but, as I rode by, SEVERAL of the cops waved at me. I waved back, of course, because I know the importance of the wave. It was exciting to me to have multiple motorcycle cops, in the middle of a speed trap operation, wave to me.

How cool are Fort Worth motorcycle cops!

Oh yeah, thinking that all the local MC cops are cool, I thought I'd initiate a wave of my own to one of them in the Keller area of Tarrant County - he didn't even look at me. So, I guess not all the cops around here are cool - just the Fort Worth traffic guys.

Someone managed to turn it into another cop thread. :rolleyes
Based on the original post, I think it's pretty clear that it was intended to be a cop thread--not a cop-bashing thread, but a cop thread nonetheless. :bitchslap

Glad you had a pleasant encounter G-Daddy. The cops around here are generally pretty cool. They have to deal with a lot of squidly sportbike behavior here in Vegas though, so it's no wonder that some have a bad attitude about sportbikers.

I've always been a little hesitant to wave at motorcycle officers since I don't want them to take it the wrong way and think I'm either making an obscene gesture or trying to flag them down. I think I'll start giving them a little nod or a low wave and see how it goes. Who knows, maybe it will help improve their perception of sportbikers in general around here. It can't hurt to remind them that not all sportbikers hate the police.

I had to clear a minivan in the #2 lane...instead of letting him pass and being behind a minivan...I sped up to switch lanes and have a clear lane ahead of me.

Not being a dick, but did you ever think that maybe it's answers like that that are causing the cop to have a dislike for people on motorcycles? Why not try to raise the standard and show a cop that we're not all assholes. The only thing acting like you did does is add more dislike and prejudice to whatever a cop may be holding prior to the contact with you.
Some cops are just naturally assholes, but most are just doing their job.

+1 for CHP. Great use of professional discretion. Other cops could take notes from those officers involved.
