Ok my back ones are almost gone and my front still has a good bit left. Is that cause I am not using enough counter steer?

Also when then start getting so close to being no more I take it that also means that I am getting close to running out of tire and might need to either, lean less counter steer more, or get a wider tire?

The front strips on all the bikes I've had are always b***** than the rear ones.

Try not to focus too much on how far you are leaning over (or how small the strips are), focus more on how smooth you get through the turn. The end result, a smooth fast corner, is more important than how far you leaned the bike over. Try leaning you body into the turn more than the bike, thsi will let you get through a corner faster with less bike lean angle. Choosing the proper lines through the corner will help too.

Thank you. That was something I was wondering/worrying about was that I was leaning to much and not using enough of my body or leaning off the bike enough. I figure if the strips are getting really small then I am probably taking line that are not the best for the turns and just cutting them to sharp.

This is all a big learning experience for me since only road dirt bikes before this.

I love how helpfull everyone is on here to. It makes me feel a lil less :squid when I can get some reasurance that I don't need to worry from more experienced riders. :beer

I do admit that when we go out riding on the back rds we do go a good bit faster than the speed limit. I know we will get some flack from people but the rds are pretty darn clear with no traffic and it one of those things that we all started off slow and lil by lil we just got going faster.

And I do apreciate the irony that I am asking this question at the same time posting up stuff about a wreck I had from coming into a turn and hitting a bunch of dirt and stones.

MSF? Is that the advanced motorcycle safty course the states runs?
And yeah I am realizing that the chicken strips shouldnt be worn down as much as they are and that it has to do with not being smooth enough with my riding. This all is very helpfull to me.

The MSF is the beginner course, that EVERYONE should take at least once. I don't care what you think you know, you'll get something out of it, if you go in with an open mind.

Have you got your endorsement yet? I only ask because it seems fully 50% of the riders out there don't. BTW, the MSF is usually the easy mode ofr getting endorsed.

Don't worry about the strips, its how you ride, not how you look standing in the Starbucks parking lot. And I wouldnd't even think about a wider than stock tire. It'll probably not fit on your bike, will do more to screw up your lean angle than "fix it", cost you more, and make it apparent to everyone that you watch OCC. ;p

Yes I have my full licesne. No I didn't take the beginner course. In maryland you don't have to to work towards your license. I was thinking about taking it anyways but don't think they let you when you have full license and you have to ride the bikes they supply (125's) on top of paying about 175 bucks. I figure I will take the advanced course so I can learn more for the same price and they let you ride your own bike so you can learn it better. Also going to look and see if there are any riding schools near enough for me to attend as well.

The thing that got me to ask about the chicken strips was that a friend noticed how small they were and then we started trying to figure out why his were wider even though he is on a lil smaller tire on his SV650 and that maybe I was taking the cornors to sharp or fast compared to him. We figured that having wider strips was actually a good thing cause you were not pushing the bike as hard on the street.

In Washington you don't have to take the MSF either, but I'm gald I did all the same. Its nice to do the course on their bikes, as you can push as hard as you dare, and have no fear of wadding your own ride.

By all means take the ERC (experienced riders course), again this one is taken regularly by guys who have been riding for years, just to keep bad habits out, and reinforce good ones. No training you can get is bad for you, and its a rare individual who can't take something from it.

Please erase the word CHICKENSTRIP from your motorcycle jargon dictionary. It's a Squid Measurement and really means nothing in the real world of riding. ;)
I know some people who call them "street riding strips". IMHO pushing your bike to the edge of the tire on the street is a bad idea. If you on the edge and have to make a change in your line because of road debris or something and that change is a harder turn you are fucked!

More smooth inputs, better lines and shifting body weight will let you go through the same corner just as fast if not faster and still have some lean angle left.

Check out the recent Lean angle and body position - Pics go and get Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding and take the MSF.

I'd rather display chicken strips instead of a damaged bike :)

As long as I don't have a wide flat spot in the middle, I'm happy. :lao
My tires are usually in a nice three part section. From the center out. The touring/commuteing strip. I ride the bike allot to commute and around town. Also any decent twisty roads are also a hour of slab or boring roads away. Sadly the middle of the tire wears down first. Second is my twisty strips, what is use up on the twisties. Thrid is my chicken strips.

Lol...I don't know why "chicken strips" are so talked about and important to some! Lol, who f*cking cares. I have a buddy that whenever he looks at a bike, he makes a comment or looks for their chicken strips!?!? I don't know why some people, mainly squids, seem to obsess over them. What's the big deal?

Goodie for you that you can get it way over...I'm so glad...this will help me sleep so much better at night.

Better yet when someone checks mine out and makes some ********* comment like "gee, you need to work on those eh?!" Gee really? Will that make me Uber L337 like you then? Seriously who gives a toss. Ride how YOU want and like to ride. The same guys that comment on how they have no chicken strips left are usually the ones who boast about being on their 3rd or 4th bike after 'laying it down a few times' (like it is something to be proud of)...... :rolleyes Gee, was it worth it!

x2 on the Brillo Pad if it's THAT important for your ego.......

These are the only 'chicken strips' ever needing any discussion!

...argghh...now I'm all hungry and shit.......
