cheerleader can only walk backwards after flu shot

Just a story that feeds on the vaccine paranoia.

Tens of thousands of people die from the flu each year and the vaccine saves tens of thousands more. But that doesn't warrant a mention because one person got screwed.
This is pandering to a nation that eschews math and science.

I don't think she's faking it. But I'm even more skeptical that it's related to the flu shot. This came up in P&R (Motto: "Kinder, Gentler Assholes - Or Else") last week and I did some digging. The only drug-induced cases of dystonia are related to medications like anti-psychotics that work in the brain. There is no history of vaccines causing dystonia.

The TV story doesn't mention it (and what do you expect if you're getting medical advice from Inside Edition?) but the most common cause of dystonia in people under 30 is genetic. Statistically speaking, the most likely cause for her illness is that she got a defective gene from one of her parents.

When a pre-existing condition suddenly develops, there's pretty much a 100% chance that it'll coincide with something else in your life. Depending on what that thing is and how irrational one tends to be, cause and effect may be misidentified.
