Yes it's true. My WRX is no more.
Yesterday I left work and it was getting pretty dark and windy. It was apparent that there was a bad thunderstorm coming in. About 3 miles from work I hear the sirens and i turn on the radio to hear that there's a tornado heading right towards where I am. Since I was in BFE and there was no shelter on the main highway I got on one of the smaller parallel roads. At this time I couldn't see and was pulling over periodically to wait for the visibility to get a little better. Then all of a sudden golf ball sized hail starts pounding my car. I decide that I need to get under some type of coverage and I came across an auto sales lot with a house nearby. So I go to turn left into the lot and somebody nails me from behind.
It was a couple of 80+ year olds who decided not to slow down and plow in to my rear end. It's still hailing and the old lady decides to get out of her car to try and help her husband out since he needed a walker to move around. I call 911 and jump out of my car to see if they're ok. The old lady has big gashes all over her arms and is bleeding pretty bad. I tell her that we need to get into the house across the street. Just then, in the middle of the street, lightning stikes the telephone pole over our heads and sparks fly everywhere and the transformer explodes. I was the loudest and most scary moment of my life. She and her husband start crying like crazy because they're all scared and I'm fearing for my life so I hustle and we finally get into the house.
The ambulance comes and takes them away but there's nothing wrong with me so I stay there. The state trooper writes her up as at-fault so it's cool and her insurance should take care of everything. I would really like it if they could total the car but I don't know how all that works. Maybe someone can give more info.
My rear end is pretty smashed up. The bumper, trunk and rear body panels are pretty much crushed. A weird thing is that my rear doors won't open even though there isn't any damage around them. I suspect the body is torqued somehow. It's in the impound lot now and her insurance company (Geico) is sending the adjuster out in a day or two. I don't know what the monetary cutoff is for totalling a car. Bluebook on my car is like 18k but I don't know if there is more than 12k of damage. If they decide not to total her, I guess I'll be without it for a good month or two. At least they'll be paying for my rental car. If anything, labor charges might be the deciding factor for totalling it. Plus the 80.00/day they'll have to pay for my rental car.
Anyone here have any experience with how they decide on what to do with the car?
