I bought a bike from a guy in Arkansas for $3,500 delivered. He was just using it as a track bike, but its a completely stock 2001 R6 with 6,950 miles on it. He said he buoght it from an Insurance Auction here in Dallas, and never got a title for it. I am planning on re-selling this bike. How do I get the title? I know I can go to the DMV and file for a lost title and have it bonded etc. How much is it to do that typically? And is there any cheaper way to get a title on this bike? I'm kinda scared to call in the VIN # to police bc it was a theft recovery, and I don't want it to come up hot and right after I tell them the VIN # I have my door kicked down, followed by a "GET ON THE GROUND SCUMBAG, NOW!!! NOW!!!":joke . Where is the VIN # to the bike so I can ask him and he can read it off to me. I asked him initially, but he said he'd have to take some of it apart to find it. Is there no where where he can just read it lickity split to me?

Someone help me out plz. I get it this weekend. And I'd like to know whether or not im gonna have to laylow with it until it's sold, or be able to ride it around a little bit. Thanks guys!

1st dude, never ever purchase a bike again without a title in hand. You can't even get a lost title, without them running the vin#, and if it does show up stolen then the police will still be notified.

The best thing you can do is contact the place where the other person supposedly purchased the bike from, they should have the paperwork, or THEY, can get the correct paperwork to you. But this sounds like BULLSHITE, and basically this other guy just screwed you over. The only real chance you have of getting rid of this "probable" hot bike, is if someone else wants to purchase it just for track. Sorry, dude, you're in a bad spot.

unless he is a dealer, he has to get a title for the bike in order for you to be able to get one. if he is a dealer, you can usually get away with having a salvage certificate. if he has nothing at all on the bike, i'd demand money back and walk away from it. resale will be low and chances are good that it's stolen.

if you need a way out (it was an ebay deal, etc.) or just want to verify that this guy is being honest, check to see that the bike has track mods. i shouldn't have turn signals or mirrors on it. the oil cap, drain nut, and filter should all be safety wired. those are the easiest to see. if it has none of these mods and no paper work, i would say there's a 98% chance it's stolen and will be nothing but trouble for you. if it does have the mods, there's still an 85% chance.

nfloor Now if this bike was truely a theft recovery, you will need to contact the auction...They could not have legally auctioned a bike that new without applying for title...If the story doesn't check out you have recieved stolen property....Never release your money without proper documentation mayun!!!!!!!

I did something very stupit like that...
I bought a bike from someone (clean tittle), but it turns out he never registered the bike since he got it, so he crossed his name and wrote mine on the tittle.

It took me a couple of months to track the previous owner to get everything in order as the tittle was no long valid with something cross-out :squid

yup... you got bent over... with no lube on that one... contact and if you havent sent money or received the bike try to cancel the deal... if not the vin should be on a sticker on the bike unless it was removed... go to the dmv and they can atleast run it for you and confirm your bentoverness...

Most bikes will have the title stamped on the frame head. You dont need to remove anything to see it either.

I bought an old Kawasaki enduro and never did get the title for it. The guy I bought it from was selling it for someone else, and it just never materialized. I was going to reconstruct one, but decided it wasn't worth it. I had the same thoghts as you, I was worried that it might have been stolen, and I didnt' want to give the DMV the VIN for this reason. Luckily, I bought the bike to ride in the woods, so thats where I keep it. No title required for that

The bit of research I did do on reconstructing a title led me to believe it is a huge pain in the ass, and it is purposely set up this way to deter people from doing it :lol

A couple of thoughts....

1. Why in the hell would you NOT want to return a stolen bike to the rightful owner and expose the thief that sold it to you? Besides, without the title it is worthless. Go have the VIN numbers ran and try to get a legit title. If it comes up stolen then at least you look honorable.

2. Why in the hell would you NOT ask the obvious questions BEFORE spending the money on a bike with no title? Hello?????

A guy Jaibird and I know bought a ZX-R not long ago. He didn't get a title with it and only a B.S. bill of sale and paid around $6k cash for it. After a few months the thrill of riding wore off and he decided to take it to the dealer and put it up on comission. After a month or so the dealer called and said someone was interested in it so they started the paperwork. That's when it was discovered the bike was stolen and the "seller" did not legally exist. Bike went back to the original owner, buyer was out $6k and the "seller" got away scott free.

2) You are really a thief and trying to get advise on how to get a title for a stolen bike.

If you did buy it just please don't say you got it off ebay. Especially if you paid by check or money orders or cash. If so break out the phillips
