So i replaced my scratched up alternator cover last night. I found holding a partially saturated towel with brake cleaner against the mating surfaces works good. Then using a little widget (razor blade in a plastic holder for the younger crowd) , lightly scrape away. Most of the time I didnt need to scrape. I worry about scratching the surfaces. The towel will rub off the old gasket that is "eaten up" by the brake cleaner. I assume carb cleaner works as well. Just be careful with these sprays. Anybody know a better way? Here are some photos before and after. Didnt take long at all.
