Well, stockish on the registered bikes anyway.

There are very strict regulations about the placement of the plate (and turn signals and reflectors) relative to the rear wheel and tail light per DOT regulations. THat's why we have those crappy mud flaps (yes, Tom, they are shit). By the letter of the law, any movement from stock location is illegeal.

I talked to my brother who's MPD and asked him. He said as long as ita facing towards the rear and has a light on it, its good. Sideways is just fine as well. Even with in the rear wheel well is ok , as long as it can be seen from the rear of the bike and with a light on it.

Go to the police department and get it straight from them. If they do not know I'm sure they will know where to send you.

I have heard from a reliable source that license plates need to be mounted in the stock location along with blinkers for bikes that have been rebuilt from a salvage title and need to be inspected for street use. Kind of tells me anything other than stock is a violation. But the police will be the best place to get your answer.

In Florida...the name of the State has to be horizontal and it is supposed to be lighted...I saw some chopper dudes getting hassled for their swing arm mounts during Bike Week...
