On Friday I took the American Heart Association CPR/AED/first aid course. Took 2 hours and was well done. I hope I never have an opportunity to use it and I really hope that I remember it all correctly if I do have an opportunity.

It took 2 hours and was not hard... highly recommended.

I was certified twice as a teenager. I had to use it once when an elderly man had a massive heart attack on the tennis courts at my town park. I did the buddy system with another guy that arrived on the scene. He did the compression, I got stuck with the mouth to mouth. The guy was definitely a smoker. I wish I could say it was a good outcome, but the man died in the hospital. I was about 20 yrs. old then, I still remember every detail about those 15 minutes... the crowd of people looking on, a frightened face of a girl I knew from high school pressed against the fence, the taste of the man's cigarette breath, the electric paddles of the EMS worker, the man's partner screaming for help...

I was certified every year from the 5th grade through college. (Mom is an RN who teaches CPR) The ratios have changed in all the years, but the basic principles are the same. Here at work they have a few courses a year, free to those of us who want to take it, the classes are always full. (They also teach it in conjuction with the defib machines that we have throughout the studio.)

This is such an important skill to have. I just I hope I will never have to use it...

Ride safe.
