Yesterday, I was riding south on 288 (Houston) and a hear a "tick" on my face plate. I scan around an see what looks like a bee. At first I thought its leg was caught in the faceplace seal and I used my left hand up to brush it off. Thats when I realized it was INSIDE the faceplate. I am amazed that I very calmly and smoothly braked to a stop on the paved shoulder. Shut off the bike, put down the kick stand and left the bike. Fortunately, the bee was stunned (twitching) and was on the inside ledge of my KBC helmet. I looked toward the ground and opened the faceplate. Poor bee fell out onto the ground. Then, I started shaking! Agghhh! I hate bees! I have a real phobia of flying stinging insects. Spiders too...

Somehow the bee had got sucked up under my chin (I have a full helmet) and hit the inside of the shield.

If there is a lesson in this other than I was very lucky and I know it, its to wear the gear. I know its preaching to the choir here, but what if I hadnt been wearing a full helmet like the Honda CRB that passed me not 10 mins earlier? That sucker was pretty big. It would have really hurt to have gotten hit on the face by it.

cya on down the road.

Riding along a beautiful country road on my HD. Of course I was wearing my beanie helmet. A bee hits me right between my lips, before I could spit it out it stung me on the inside of my mouth. Fortunately, I'm not allergic to them. But, it left a nasty looking spot in my mouth for a few weeks. Windshield went on after that!

I've gotten a few flying things in my helmet ..... it's not fun no matter what kind it is. Not much you can really do but open the visor & hope it flies out, if not u gotta pull over.
One of the things I like about my helmet is it has a small mesh "shield" right under the chin. It helps keep out some of the dirt & flyin critters. Not sure if they sell somethin like this anywhere though, this one came with the helmet.

Keep some benzocaine in the tank pad to reduce the stinging... and if you suspect that you are allergic, get some strong anti-histamines and ______(whatever your doctor tells you).

One of my 60 year old friends climbed in a twin, fired her up, was taxiing to the runway when a bee stung him. He had NEVER been bothered by bee stings before but he felt funny, so he parked it and called his wife. She lived 10 minutes from the airport. HE was very swollen by the time she got there and passed out in the doctors office. He survived because he didn't take off and got immediate medical attention.

Bee stings can kill you unexpectedly... be prepared! And I think I'll order one of those wind stoppers!

I often ride with my visor up. On one occasion a fly went into my mouth. In trying to spit it out, I made this ordeal only messier. Since then, whenever a small bug graces my mouth, I just chew it up. Now a bee would be another thing all together.

Worst I've gotten was a fly. Started buzzing all over the place. I opened the shield doing 50 hoping it would fly out, thought it did, got home and the darn thing got wedged between the cushion on top of my head still moving.

Hahaha. A bee? Try bats!

I was riding through west Texas on I-10 last summer and had just spotted the first real "mountains" of my trip, so I exited to the service road and crossed under the interstate through the empty one lane tunnel to get to the other service road so the interstate wouldn't be in my photo, not thinking much of it. Snapped the photograph, turned around and went back through the tunnel, and I noticed the cieling seemed to be moving...

I had woken up a few hundred sleeping bats which just swarmed the tunnel. I had to tuck in behind my screen and gas it - they were all over me. Forget Fear and Loathing, this was the REAL bat country! Good times. :cheers

Here's the photo, FWIW.

I didn't get any inside the helmet (I'm not sure they would've fit, they were fairly good sized bats), but there were a few on the outside of my helmet, one on the faceshield, a few on the windshield, and his buddies we having a party everywhere else, all over the tunnel. I think I probably had one on my shoulder too. They didn't want to come out into the sun with me at least. Glad I was wearing all my armor. :eek:nfloor

I had alomst the exact same thing happen where a leg of a bee got caught on the INSIDE of my helmet. I was riding with just the little-gap @ the bottom, and right as I shifted my head down and began to accelerate my facemask slammed shut - right as the bee got inside my helmet - getting its leg caught right between the shell and the rubber.

I got a picture of it on my cell after I pulled over and tore my helmet off - but can't figure out how to get it off the damned phone.

Sorry to hijack, but I noticed you're on a Ninja 250. I'm toying with the idea of a smaller displacement bike for commuting and maybe short distance (250-500 miles) touring on a budget. How's the top speed and fuel economy on the Ninja? Can you still outaccellerate most of the cages? Can it cruise at 80mph? Can it handle luggage?

I have never owned one, but I have spent considerable amount of time on one. They are a snappy little bike, but I am 6'2", 230lbs, so its not very comfortable for me. I was able to top one out on a long long straight stretch, and I hit 98mph. I don't know if I would load it up with a ton of luggage, but I bet it could handle a small amount. I have to say I was surprised with the bike. My friends averaged about 60mpg. If you have longer than a 28" inseam, I think you will be cramped. Oh, and I out accelerated an F150 until about 70, then it was about even up to 98.

^^^ IMO 250's are not good for hwy/touring riding...

Yes they are great for around the city but struggle to crusing at a low enough rpm to get decent milage, plus quite loud think of a bee buzzing in your ear at 100db...
