ok..just got bike 2 weeks ago. was out riding and main harness started melting. never blew a fuse untill insulation melted and shorted to ground. harness was mwelted in several places. fuel pump relay, starter sol and alt connector. repaired harness to try to track the problem. only wir that is getting hot now is alt. any ideas on how to check alt. or should i replaces slightly melted connector and check it again

Get a voltmeter and check alternator output at the batery. 14.5V dc max., 5K rpm. Check output of stator on each of the 3 stator wires 50V ac or more at 5K rpm. Sounds like your voltage regulator is not regulating

I think my stator was overcharging my battery and the wires melted.

The alternator always overcharges, it is up to the regulator to control the alternator to a 14.5V peak.

alt putting out 15+ volts at around 4000 rpm...so time to replace voltage reg in alt
