Ya! Hoo!
I was just watching CNN News and there was a discussion about a proposal in Texas to increase the speed limit to 80 MPH. Whoa.
But then, why not?
People are driving at that speed anyway around Atlanta. :banana

I used to hope they would in TX as well, now i'm not so sure. In my cage I set cruise at 65 so I don't have to pull a 2nd mortage to pay for more gas. Regardless, everyone here does go 75-80 on most expressways. At least they can be realistic when building roadways etc. when everyone is going the recommended speed.

DOT proposes 80 mph limit on West Texas interstates
Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO — Speed limits would increase to 80 mph on two West Texas interstate highways under a proposal by the Texas Department of Transportation.

The Texas Transportation Commission could take up the proposed change, which would apply to Interstate 10 and Interstate 20 in West Texas, when it meets in Austin next week.

Some advocates for fuel conservation and safety have questioned the wisdom of boosting speed limits, but transportation officials said most drivers are already cruising at nearly 80 mph.

Carlos Lopez, director of traffic operations for the department, said a survey of both interstates found that 85 percent of motorists were driving up to 79 mph.

"If people begin to think that the number on the sign is unreasonable, then they won't respect it," Lopez said. "Just putting up a lower number on the highway isn't going to slow down traffic."

The change was made possible by state legislation passed last year making 10 counties in West Texas eligible for higher speeds, starting with Kerr County and stretching to the El Paso County line.

But with gas prices at a premium, some groups said drivers should be encouraged to slow down rather than speed up.

Increasing the speed limit "will have a perverse reaction," said Peter Iwanowicz, director of environmental health at the American Lung Association. "Increasing the speed limit will increase fuel use."

U.S. Department of Energy studies show gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. The agency's Web site says that motorists generally pay an additional 20 cents per gallon of gas for each 5 mph they drive over 60.

Lopez said fuel conservation is already lost for most drivers, who are traveling at 77 to 79 mph.

Safety advocates also fear that raising the limit will lead to more traffic fatalities.

"Our concern is that the two biggest contributors to traffic accidents is speed and alcohol," said Jerry Johns, president of the Southwestern Insurance Information Service, an industry group. "That has been consistent for years and years and years."

Statistics kept by the Texas Department of Public Safety show each time the state has changed its speed limits, there has been a correlating effect on the number of traffic fatalities.

Department spokesman Randall Dillard said the 80 mph speed limit is intended to make driving on the interstate safer.

"It's generally considered a safer condition when motorists are traveling at a uniform speed," Dillard said.

Not bad... good for you i hope it comes true

Here we have 120kph limit (74.5645431 mph) but no one respects it
Normal cruise speeds for highways are from at least 140 kph to the limit of the veichles
We europeans (especial latin ones) are very off limits :bitchslap

I amuse most people will drive a little over the posted speed limit. It seems absurd to raise the speed limit because most people are driving faster. If the limit is raised to 80 I am sure most people will drive over 80.

I lived in Houston for 6 months for a job assignment back in the winter of 01-02. I believe when I first moved there the speed limit on Beltway 8 was 75, and it was lowered to 55, because the legislative argued that it would be more environmental friendly. They started enforcing it heavily and the whole town of Houston was in an uproar about it. I believe they ended up upping it to 65. This was also the same winter where they put into act an open container law. Up until then you could drink and drive in Texas as long as you were above the legal limit (which I believe was .10 at that time).

Now Texas is trying to go to 80 on some highways. It doesn't seem that they know if they are coming or going with these laws.

when is it going to stop? first it was 55 and people were speeding, then went to 65 people were still speeding, interstate is 75 and people are still speeding now they want it to go to 80? hmmm i think i see a trend. but serously i like higher speeds without the worry of having to get a ticket but as the trend is we will all be driving on autobahns in the future. damn i like the thought of that. no speed limits. :smilierr

A few years ago I got stopped in texas for doing 74 in a 70 zone!! I-40 west of amarillo. When the trooper told me I said "You've got to be kidding". I really know why he stopped me...I had out of state plates and he wanted to milk me. Very bad law enforcement tactic.

Luckily he didn't write me a ticket....so the fact that texas will have 80 zones...just don't go over 80.

I would just like to add this: Worst Interstate Ever. From Texas all the way to Arkansas (NM is just "ok") that road is empty, windy, boring, nothing. Expansion joint after expansion joint for 500 miles. Gadunk. Gadunk. Gadunk. All day long. It's like water torture.

If I'm going east to west or vice versa anymore, it's either I-20\I-10 or I-70 for me. I-40 is a blight upon the earth and should be destroyed.

55 mph is a throw back to when tires weren't radial technology (more like nylon reinforced or something like that), punny brakes (and only two disk brakes at that), loosy suspensions and even worse direction/ steering.

I hate it when safety is used in the argument to support lower speed limits as cars are so much better safety-wise today than they ever were. Remember when the dashboards were hard as a rock, full of jagged and intrusive angles, no air bags, one kid sat on the arm rest and the other slept on the rear sill of the window? Man those were the days!!! Seat belts were tucked in so deep in betwen the seating that when one buckle would stick out, you'd almost wonder what it was and stick it right back in? :lao

With all the PC BS going on, it is impressive that the idea of actually raising a speed limit would be proposed, pushed, supported and in the end implemented. I say go for it!!!

(Was a study ever done to find out how many people die because they fall asleep at the wheel, bored as a result of following the speed limit?)

BTW, I found this week while doing my road motorcycle exam that here in the land of kilometers per hour, an even speed limit like 100 kph is the law. An odd speed limit like 45 kph on an exit ramp is only a recommendation...

they actually had speed limits everywhere set higher and decided they couldnt deal with it so lowered city areas (loops and such) to 60mph and highway to 65 and 70 (65 at night). i guess if i want to goto San Anton it would help :eek:nfloor

Wyoming and Montana had "use due care" during daylight hours speed limits a few years back.

Three things:
1. Schmidt- :upyours , stay the hell out of my state

2. There is nothing but desert in West Texas. A higher speed limit won't hurt anyone because they are already doing it. It's just another form of decrimilizing.

3. Schmidt- Assuming you are referring to Bush. You can't judge a state by one person. He's not even from here. He was born in Connecticut. Now apologize and all will be forgiven. :cheers
