Went into the local shop today to get some quotes for new rubber on my 250 as the current plastic "tires" combined with the slick roads in my area call for a lot of slipping. After realizing what a rip off the shop was I decided to shoot the shit with a dealer and check out what I could expect to pay when I eventually move up to a Ninja 650R, FZ6, etc.

After showing me a couple of those ugly "beginner" bikes he showed me the killer deals they had on three brand new 2008 Honda CBR1000RRs. He said they knocked the price down to $8500 - which of course means I could probably get it for like $8k cash out the door with some haggling. He assured me that I'd get tired of the 600 and a liter was the way to go. Thank god for that because I hesitated for a split second if this would be the right thing to do. Progressive quoted me something like $300 for liability - no theft, comp/collision, etc (why would I need that, no one would steal a CBR)... or $4000 for full coverage, but chances are I wouldn't be able to afford that after spending $8k on a bike. So the question is, what color should I get, yellow or red?

...all joking aside, I can really see how someone who hasn't researched anything could get suckered into this sort of trap by just stepping into the dealership. The 08 fireblade was cheaper than any new 600ss on the floor (all were 09s) and the dealer was seriously pressing the sale. This isn't the same as a Toyota dealer trying to push selling an 08 Camry V6 for a killer deal over an 09 Camry I4 as I know the liter bike would launch you into a wall a second or so faster than the 600. I can't believe theres no guilt or shame in them doing this. I guess some people will do anything for a little extra coin. With that said, if I had several years of experience riding different bikes under my belt and some money to burn the red Fireblade would have been mine!

sorry but i call BS. you dont get tired of a 600 unless you constantly ride wfo the 600 can do anything the 1L can. Oh and i dont have a 600 but i rode my frriends and its every bit as capable as the 1L. Also, if you ever decide to do track days then the Tire bill will be significantly lower.

I really don't know why he'd want to sell a cheaper liter over a more expensive 600 in terms of his comission, but he really was not the first dealer to mention that before (the other ones being a matter of comission though). My guess is there is a dealer bonus for clearing out the older bikes or something.

PS. why are tires cheaper? don't they have the same size wheels?

Prices on bikes at dealerships depend on inventory, prospect of selling that bike, incentives from the manufacturer, etc. Getting a good deal is never a good excuse for getting too much bike.

Wow, I honestly don't even look at pricing for the liter bikes when I go into dealerships (too much bike for too little money in most cases)...but if one of those 3 '08 CBR1k's happened to be a Repsol replica @ $8,500, I'd have to buy it and just lock it in the basement until years later or I gained the skill to ride it, lol.

When I was in bike sales I never had enough 600's in stock and had a hard time selling liter bikes for various reasons. It didnt take long for the sales manager to start lowering the prices so we didnt get stuck with the bikes and have the next years models comming in.

It actually costs a dealer money to have bikes on the showroom floor.

Sometimes the factory offers a bonus to the dealer on a certain model and the sales manager wants to push that one just for the time the bonus is in effect.

I would cringe everytime I heard another salesman or some guys friend use that lame ass line "You will get tired of a 600 so you should get the 1000." I held back many times but now and then I couldnt help but say to them "You get that 1000 and meet me at the track and I will kick your ass on my bone stock R6. Then you will learn that its all about the rider and not the bike."

just a thought, but I have heard this same string from dealers in my area as well. A lot of these sales people dont ride , and dont care..... as long as they make thier money what do they care if some kid wraps himself around a tree?

Last week I heard a dealer tell a young kid, about 20, that all the 600's are beginner bikes.... this as he was looking at the usual gsxr 600 ....

But they dont include that part in the Hurt report do they?

Just look at Advertising. All Speed ever shows is the Yamaha R1!!!! R1!! R1!!! :bitchslap but, but Rossi Rides an R1!!!!!!! :blowingup

great now that you have talked people into one of the fastest ugliest yamahas out there, What about the R6?? hummmm. Even the manufacture doesn't promote small bikes.

And Thou I love the 1000RR I rode for a month. the only reason i need that bike is to do over 150mph or rock 3rd gear wheelies at over 100mph.

So i dont see my self needed or outgrowing my bike for a while. B***** sprocket and extra stunt bike... maybe. but b***** no need.

I have only known a very, very few salesmen who rode. However I have worked with a few who really did care what they sold. But for the most part you are correct about motorcycle salesmen.

You see commercials for the new R1 because it is a new bike, not because there is some manufacture conspiracy to push the bikes which will do the most harm to the new rider. As soon as Yamaha releases a new R6 (with a sexy sounding funky crank plz!) you'll see that bike during commercial breaks.

I dont see any point in bypassing a step to 600ss to 1000cc unless its a touring bike. Its funny how many people perfer to go fast in a straight line than in corners. Sure you can ride your bike however you want but it always makes me a little sad when I see some buy a liter bike and only do 2,000 miles a year and town only miles.

No dice bro. They actually do have a Repsol (although 09 I believe) for $13k. I am in the same boat as you though. If I could get it for $8k cash I'd buy it and keep it in my apartment as art and take it out for a little 30-40mph cruise once a week to keep everything fresh.

I wish they had the same incentives on the 08 liters as the FZ6 or 650s. I guess those bikes move more quickly

From what I heard a lot of there are a lot of 08's leftover at dealership floors (1000RR's, ZX10R's) that they sell them so cheap just to make room for the 09's. Heck if i had the dough I'd already buy a 08CBR1000 for that price. But it is kinda irresponsible for salesmen to push these deals on a newb who shouldn't even be on a 600..

ya, thats all u need a 1000 for LOL

I cant see myself needing more than my current bike forever LOL. I mean sure, you get sick of bikes, and get the itch for a new one, but I just dont see how I could ever need more, especially in the streets of NJ....

+1

Completely depends on the dealership you go to. Go to one of the really large dealers that only works with the big 4, and chances are good you'll get a moron salesmen who knows nothing about bikes.

Go to a dealership that does specialty stuff like BMW, Ducati, MV, Triumph, etc and you'll probably find the exact opposite. I've yet to find a BMW bike dealer where almost every single employee wasn't a hardcore touring guy.

actually the tires are 190 for 1000 vs 180 600, so tires are more expensive.

what do you think the ratio of beginner riders v. experienced riders watch the motorcycle races?
