I think it's the fact that the dude was thinking that he was all cool because he had 500mi under his belt, when that's not enough to have experience.

i think the lessons in the movie are: not thinking your "cool" because you rode 500 miles (the girl), dont get target fixation (he was looking at the birds), riding with more experainced/faster riders will get you killed or hurt (getting shot by the guys that he was racing symbolized that), and the rest should be pretty much obvious
