from what i heard sunlight is bad for brake fluid, something like it breaks it down.
+1. sunlight is bad for the fluid, though I'm willing to bet many put them on there for the "hardcore" look

Can't be anything more than poseur points. Do you really think that Honda (Suzuki, etc.) would make a reservoir out of material that didn't block UV if needed? Do you really think that a sweat band will prevent anything bad from happening if you go down? Does your master cylinder leak all the time?

:rolleyes

Never seen it on a motorcycle, lots of times in cars though.

It was just in this months Road Racer X, merely to keep the brake fluid from running down onto the bike. Nothing to do with sunlight. From one of the Yamaha teams mechanics, iirc, but my copy of it is at work, so I can't check.

There is more to it in the beginning than poseur points as it does keep the fluid from spilling out on the ground if the bike ends up on its side and does nothing to prevent damage. It was mostly used on race bikes to conform to the rules but if you see people with this on the street they have copied it as a way to look like a racer.

Yeah pro racer put them on their bikes for posure points. A gallon of milk in a see through bottle looses vitamins from being exposed lights; the milk in a cardboard container is better for you. I'm talking about light bulbs not even the sun. Now yes it's there isn't a huge difference between the two but there is a difference. I think that may be why oil is always in an opague bottle with a little window. Someone already said it has nothing to do with the sun and maybe thats true but to me it does make sense. The resevoir is translucent so sun light can get through and maybe do damage to the fluid. Also I'm sure the sunlight heats the fluid which isn't good. Yeah the sweat band will prevent something bad from happening when you crash at the track. It soaks up fluid that may leak out while your bike is lying on its side. No my resevoir doen't leak all the time because the cap is on the top and I don't lay my bike on its side on the ground. Oh and I'm pretty sure I heard racers on kawiforums say that sometimes their fluid will get so hot it will expand and leak a little out while racing.

I don't use my rear brake so I'm putting one on there either. However, I did upgrade the fluid, so maybe I'll start using after all. I'm still not putting one on it though. Too small and difficult to get to as it is.
