215lb + track day....

1446 Views 26 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  bigsissy33064
I'm seriously thinking about doing a track day and have been looking at requirements....
Will my 215# 5'11" fat ass get laughed off the track as I squeeze into some XL leathers or are there other "big guys" out there that do track days?

what is a REASONABLE price to pay for track day gear?
1 piece or 2 piece?

Well said. Some of the NESBA control riders have pretty big guts and are the fastest guys out there!

If you already have street gear, I'd highly recommend a 1 piece for the track. There are many good reasons why no one who is really fast wears a 2 piece (hint: safety). It's just like any other gear decision, do you want to trade comfort for crash peformance, and if so, to what extent.

www.sportbiketrackgear.com and of course www.newenough.com have good prices on high quality suits.

I'm not sure how close you are to the nesba tracks (they list them on their website) but here is some good information (read the rider's manual for common bike prep and gear requirements):

www.sportbiketracktime.com is another big track day org

The last issue of Motorcyclist has a story written by a guy about going to track school. It has a pic of him sitting on the bike he looks to be like 280+. So I don't think you need yo worry.
Yeah....215 5'11" is not that big...you will see much b*****, faster riders out there.
Plenty of b***** guys out there, for sure.

If you're just trying out the track thing and don't want to commit to leathers just yet, you can probably rent some. It's usually about $50-$100, depending on the organization. I know Ridesmart and Lone Star Track Days have rentals available.
Never did a track day, 250 5'10", and I ride it like I stole it. Especially when I'm on my way to a twinkie sale!

I'm sick and tired of you sub-250lb guys calling yoursleves fatasses. My dad's 215 pounds and like a 34 waist. Sometimes I wonder if I should forcibly feed him lard. You make me feel bad for being 300 on a 250R :D.

well id say since he is just looking to start out that he would get more use out of a two piece... i know that there are some minimal safety issues compared to a 1pc... but he would get more of his moneys worth and would be more easily street used and not too mention it is hella more comfortable and you can wear one or the other while on the street... if he gets into and really likes it then yea id eventually go with a 1pc but until you know how you are going to like it id say you would get more value out of your money with a two pc....
As far as 2 piece vs 1 piece, this is a track day not a race. I'm not planning on getting a 1 piece unless I'm gonna race or if I get bumped up to the main group from novice.

One thing that was missed earlier regarding comfort vs safety:
If you're roasting your ass so much that you are uncomfortable, you are about to be unsafe from the distraction. Discomfort is unsafe at a certain extent.
dude im 215lbs @ 5'7"

lol
Ok thanks for the tips and reassurance...I owe each of you a beer!

I've been on somewhat of a bender the past week and felt a bit large from it.

as for the 2pc vs 1pc....I'm gonna die in ANY leathers in TX weather.
Whether you decide to go 1pc or 2pc, just make sure you get a well constructed suit that is perforated!!!
Trust me, when it comes to perspiration I know all about perforation :)
