Hi guys,
I am new to the world of sportbikes as well as this forum. A few weeks back, I finally upgraded from my old honda cruiser to an 05 FZ6. The bike seems to be in great shape, fires right up, runs smooth, etc. However, I am having some difficulties with the idle speed. It is currently idling at around 1440-1490 rpms, which is a bit high (manual specifies between 1250 and 1350. When I go to adjust the idle with the screw, no matter how far I turn the idle screw out the idle doesn't drop. If I screw the screw in, however, the idles increases. I just checked the valve clearances and all are within specification.
The owner before me did install a slip on pipe. Could this be the culprit? I tried disconnecting the ECU from the battery as was suggested in other forums to "reset" things, but this didn't help. Any suggestions you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

Is the bike fully warmed up when you are adjusting the idle? Just to verify, are you turning the correct screw?

Spray carb/throttle body cleaner around the intake boots in between the throttle bodies and the cylinder head, it could be a leak in there, allowing a bit more air into the engine.

The bike is warmed up when I test (I usually let the radiator cycle once just to make sure. The idle is not as high as when I first start the bike up, but it doesn't drop below 1440. I have cleaned the throttle bodies and boots, but no improvement. Any other suggestions? This is so confusing!

Spray the carb cleaner to check if there are leaks, not to clean it. If it is sucking air, the carb cleaner will get in there and bog the engine down.

First of all, thank you to everyone for all of the advice! However, I am still having the same issue. I tried the spraying carb cleaner around the boots/TBs when it was running, but to no avail. RPM didn't change at all, suggesting that an air leak may not be the problem. Could it be that the ECU isn't properly tuned to the pipe? Again, it runs great besides the idle being about 100 rmp high and unable to adjust. What else could it be?

Get into diagnostic mode and adjust the CO values to richen the air/fuel mixture, 4 points at most at a time. Due to EPA regulations they are very lean from the factory, the slip on might have made it even leaner, but I'm not really sure if that is enough to make the idle high.

have you made sure that nothing is blocking the throttle plates or throttle? just a thought. ya never know.

if you can and have the tools, make sure the throttles are synched. my FJR had a minor issue with idle until i got it synched. it wasn't as bad as yours, but it did help.

The simplest things should be checked first.

Is there free play in the throttle cables?



You said the valves were just "checked". Did this problem exist prior to the valve "check" or come after that was done?

But to answer one of your questions, No the slip on pipe would not be the culprit.

that's actually a good idle speed.
with a high performance tune running in my power commander mine will not idle below 1500. I've never had my brother's 06 fz6 torn down that far to tell you for sure if there is another set screw preventing it from going lower. it could be the throttle cables like mentioned. but to be honest I would leave it at what it's at right now. the previous owner probably had to bump it up to smooth it out because of the aftermarket pipe.
when I got one on my R6 the idle became a lot more erratic and would stall out set at the factory settings.
