Its been cold here and rainy and I have been out of town alot so the 600rr sat for 2-3 weeks. When i tried to start it nothing happened, it was completely dead. So I push started it in 2nd gear(which took a great deal of effort, more than normal). Then I let it idle and warm up got on and it rode like a champ for 10 blocks. After 10 blocks it started to stall while I was riding it, when I was on the throttle it would suddenly give out and the revs would drop for a second or two then pick up again. At stop signs it felt like it was gonna die and I kept reving it to keep it alive. When i got back home i took the battery out and hooked to a charger which said it was charged. I then put the battery back in the bike and turned the key to the on position, no lights came on but an extremely dim neutral light. Then I hooked the charger up to the battery in the bike which still claimed the battery was charged and the lights started coming on only when the charger was hooked to the battery, the moment I would take the charger off the lights would shut off. But it still would not start even with the charger hooked to it, just made a grinding noise that I assume was the starter solinoid. So i put it in my garage since I had some stuff to do.

I pulled the red connector by the battery and the 30 amp fuse that was in it was in great shape. I replaced it anyway. I will be taking the fairings off and checking all the fuses and will start testing different areas of the system to see where the power is being lost or drained. I would really like peoples input to see if anyone has had a problem like this before. Thanks for the help

the charger doesn't tell you the battery is good... it just tells you it's not taking a charge any more, which could be because it's fully charged, or because it has a dead cell. You need to take the battery to an auto parts store and have them run a diagnostic on it. Don't let them sell you a battery you need to add fluid to.

It could also be a bad ground connection, but bad battery is more likely.

Put a multimeter on the battery alone and see if it reads 12.7 volts. Each cell is about 2.1 volts, so a dead cell will show up as an output of 10.5-10.6 (if anything).

This is what I planned on doing this weekend, I have to go to my dads house and get his multimeter. Just wanted to see what you guys think it is most likely. I know its a hard question to ask without actually being in front of the bike, which is why i tried to explain everything. How many cells would be needed to start the bike? all 12 volts?

thanks for your thoughts guys

You can't test a battery with a multimeter. It needs to be tested under a load. Just take it to napa or carquest or discount auto or somewhere like that and have them test it. It's free and you can buy a new battery there if it's bad. I'm pretty sure it's the battery since you said you leave the bike sit and that's the worst thing you can do to a battery.

And turning the bike on or trying to start it wouldnt be considered putting it under load?

Cranking it while checking it would put it under load... It'd help give you an idea about the battery.

Sounds like your battery is toast, especially if it can't light up the neutral light much less crank it over...
