I put over 60k miles on my FJR. Reliable as hell. Easy to work on and long valve adjustment intervals.

I also found the VStrom to be very comfortable. The 1000 has a lot of aftermarket stuff...

I rode a friend's for a bit. Very comfortable with some practical options. Handled differently but only because I wasn't used to it. Great bike.

I used the Garmin iQue. Nice to have the PDA option when travelling. I stuck it under my tank bag's map cover when it was damp out and still got decent GPS reception.

In a radical about-face I sold the FJR and now ride the new XT250. Soft luggage is more flexible...
