Feet per second - a good read

I am bored, so I felt like starting a Thread for newbies to understand more about some things to consider when riding.

There are 5280 feet in 1 mile. To calculated Feet per second you will need to divide by 3600, since there are 3600 seconds in 1 hour. this is the result:

1mph = 1.466666666666667 feet per second.

This is the base line to calculate feet per second at a given speed.
Common legal speed limits:
15mph = 22fps
25mph = 37fps
30mph = 44fps
35mph = 55fps
45mph = 66fps
55mph = 81fps
65mph = 95fps
70mph = 103fps
75mph = 110fps

Consider how long it takes you to react to a situation, if it takes you .5-1.5 seconds to react realize how much ground you have already covered, do you know how far those numbers are from your current location?

Here are some numbers for the 100mph+ guys:

100mph = 147fps (about half a football field)
110mph = 161fps
120mph = 176fps
130mph = 191fps
140mph = 205fps
150mph = 220fps
160mph = 235fps
170mph = 249fps

Now blink. That's instantaneous, right? No, it's about .25 seconds. Try it - blink ten times fast and see how long it takes you.

This is a well thought out and apparently well researched post we should all be taking very seriously.

Thanks to binx_19 for posting it.

It should probably be a sticky.

Awwww, how sad!!!

None of my bikes can do a football field in a second. I guess it's now time to upgrade to a turbo Hayabusa.

Go soothingly on the greasy mud, for therein lies the skid demon.

Did we really need a scientific explanation of why speed is so much fun?

Mathematically the operation would be as follows:

(55mi/hr)*(5280ft/mi)*(hr/3600s)

Easy peasy

So let's see it as a percentage increase in distance traveled

So if you DARE to go 25 mph, you are looking at a 68% increase in distance traveled over 15 mph!!!

STOP THE INSANITY!! Don't exceed 15 mph

Ah someone who can use office! Haha

Crash percentages are just as exponential in terms of speed and multiplying injury risks. Pretty much: 15mph and under an you will live lol

It was just sarcasm, I have no interest in something like that. I think that straight line speed is boring, what gets your heart pumping is acceleration and... The street is no place for that.

After a couple times I realized that the only thrill on straight line speed came from the "I'm going to die" factor, not because speed is exciting by itself (otherwise being on an airplane at 500+ mph would be exhilarating). On the track, any kind of it, you can get high doses of acceleration and excitement, and unless I were doing Texas mile kind of events, I have no need for a 240mph bike (is it even possible?).

Go soothingly on the greasy mud, for therein lies the skid demon.
