The whole wearing a helmet and implementing a helmet law is a much more complicated issue than it appears to be. Im working on a large research paper on this topic and I used to support the initiative of a mandatory helmet law. But reality is, that there simply is not enough research or data on helmet profiency, and this research is not completely bulletproof.
Whether it should be legal or up to the individual to decide is one aspect of this topic. Another aspect is that because of the vast amount of manufacturers, who apply their own standards of testing, it is nearly impossible to evaluate which helmets work and which ones do not. In addition, all accidents are, generally speaking, completely unique, which combined with the sheer variety of helmets makes it nearly impossible to accurately determine how each helmet would perform in any given situation. Lastly, just because a law gets implemented does not automatically mean everyone will abide by it. Right, TJ?
Many motorcycle accidents involve another vehicle, which poses the question of whether motorists are just not aware of motorcyclists? Maybe there is indeed a strong need for more driver's education, both for motorists and drivers?
I don't think implementing a helmet law will solve all the issues with rising insurance costs, number of injuries, deaths or accidents, but I think it is a reasonable suggestion considering the current statistics. A combination with more license requirements, education and public awareness campaigns may prove much more effective than just a mandatory helmet law.
On another note, I got a chance to ride a 200 mile loop yesterday out to Piedmont on 34, then Ironton, Fredericktown and then 72 back to Cape. A beautiful day for riding and I snapped a couple of photo's as well. Here is one:
