id say go look for a ex500 or ninja 500r (same bike different fairings) and ride it one year....great starter bike and also very forgiving for makin stupid mistakes. enough power to run a lil but not enough to really hurt ya either.

dont jump on a 600 anything if ur inexperienced and dont let ur friends tell ya differently a 600cc bike is nothin to joke about as far as power goes...who knows when ull get a stupid idea to pop wheelies from a dead stop or try and do rolling endos. the 500 is a good tease bike like a woman lettin u touch 4th base then slappin ya away ...the 500 will let u taste the power but will slap u away if u want to much to fast.

glad to see the motorcycle forum is back on bikes and away from guns....

I concur with both the motorcycle advice and the gun statement! Excellent advice.

+1 on the 500 ninja (that's what i started on and did good with it)

it's twice the power of the 250 ninja and a little bigger. if you want a 600 go for the new yamaha FZ6R. it's yamaha's entry level bike now. i think it's sitting at 60hp which would not be to much if you take the MSF class. if your not going to take the MSF class then get the 250 ninja.

good point. we have a used 2009 FZ6R on the lot right now. Guy bought it to start on and traded it for an R6.

Not sure what the price is. But gonna be less than new.

so ud prefer puttin him on a 600 with 60 hp over a 500 with 50-54 when i believe a 250 has roughly (this means i think the hp is close to i might be off as much as 10-20 off in this estimate) 35 hp? ill admit i had no clue they made 600s with such little hp... i guess when u get a 600rr as a 600 to compare its not the same lol

I believe the FZ6R is somewhere around 75 to 80hp at the crank. Not sure. Dirk should know more.

i have been reading about the new fz6r and the only have 64 hp. the reason this bike is better than the 500 is that it's a fuel injected bike and bigger as well so it would be a good bike to ride on longer rides. also you wouldn't get tired of it so fast. i got tired of the ex500 in one summer. nothing wrong with the ex500 at all i just wanted more power.

I'm assuming the numbers I heard were at the crank then. Sorry for the confusion.

Yup... 78hp at the crank. They made that bike to compete directly with the Ninja 650R, the GSX650F, and the SV650. All of those bikes are in the 70's at the crank.

The FZ6 (non-R) is 98hp at the crank. Mine was 89hp at the tire stock, 96hp after mods.

Well, the 650R averages right around 64hp on dynos, so they are really close than I thought then.

Do you know if Surdyke is going to have the dyno back anytime soon? I'm changing a lot and I'm just kinda curious where mine's going to be.

no idea right now. It is rumored that the Harley douchebags are gonna get rid of the trailer and permanently mount it in their "pig pen" (my term not theirs). If so, I'm sure they would try to regulate how we use it and be real jerks about it. Oh.... don't feel bad about 64 horsepower. The brand spanking new Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide with the 96 cubic inch engine and six speed transmission makes a whopping.... wait for it..... 64hp!

Not to mention it weighs 800lbs+. Anyway, I'm getting different exhaust, air filter, and some air box mods, so I figure thats good for a couple...might be at 66 or so. Haha. I wish there was some way hack the fuel system for mine like you did on yours. I really don't want to have to get a power commander, but that may be something to get soon.

I was going to just save the money for a different bike, but I started getting insurance quotes and I'm sticking with the Ninja for awhile. I can't justify spending $2000 a year on insurance when I have a perfect record. That's just stupid.
