it'll get better. and when they work the bugs out of the tranny and scale it down a bit, you'll begin to see an automatic option for sportbikes.

Besides a few outlandish choppers, I've never seen a bike that was so hideous that I wanted to gouge my eyes out. Until now. I just threw up in my mouth.

Were they going for the "Middle-aged man who wants to hang out with his Harley buddies but still troll for high school girls" demographic?

i think they're targeted at the " i want all the power/looks of a sportbike has without all the shifting involved" demegraphic. the same thing happened with cars, damn near every model came with a stick option and eventually you can barely find on on the lot. unless it's a high performance/sporty type car. sport bikes are made for sport but as we all well know, more people have them for other reasons than sport. i see more squids than sport riders nowadays. and it's just getting bigger.

Experimenting with re-introducing an old idea, most people here never saw one of the old bikes from a way back with auto trans (or cross-over features from a scooter) to potential riders who want a custom look and the convienience of auto tranny w/o the "stigma" of riding a scooter.

I think you're right, but Honda is trying to do the impossible: carve a new market. The new market will draw from the same group that produced the Harley buyers during the 80's, with the additional pressure from fuel prices.

Honda took a huge risk that gas prices will NOT drop, so this bike will be a short time failure, and may cut even, at best, but only if gas gets up way high again.

Honda management may have also envisioned that the sport riders of today would be interested in the future. Wrong headed thinking, which shows that those that can build good bikes haven't a clue about how to ride them. My point is that sport bike riders will not ever take a step backward in performance and handling regardless of the aging process.

This bike, in my opinion, and I agree with the op, will follow the failure path of the Ford Edsel. But worse.

The "longer, lower, wider" slogan from Pontiac in the 60's comes to mind.

You'd think they would have learned from the 'Rune'.

Hey, I think you hit on it. The bike is a renamed Rune, with some minor changes.

So, repackage the cruiser Rune as a 'crossover' and hope that some airheads will take the bait.

They put too much money into the Rune factory stuff, and will not accept such a long term margin loss.

Classic marketing strategy to overcome past failure.
