Default Shorty exhaust on my ZZR 600?

If anyone has heard how it sounds, its exactly how I think a bike should sound! Anyway, I was wondering if there are negative affects of gutting the exhaust, and running it like that, aside from any legal issues. will it hurth the engine?

Also, if there is anyone who has instructs on how to do it?

Thanks all!

I'm not 100% sure about this, but my understanding is that the better flow will lean the fuel mixture out a little bit. You might want to install a jet kit, or at least shim the carbs

It depends on what you mean by gutting it out.. If you mean to have a completely empty chamber and remove all the baffles and resonator ability then it is loud as hell and raspy (louder than with no can IIRC). If you do it I recommend removing the guts and cutting to fit the section without baffles but keep the fiberglass material. As far as how it runs I don't believe you will have too much trouble if you add some fuel to the mixture. I believe you will still have enough back pressure to not get in trouble.

There are shorty pipes on the market if you go with a 03-04 header and I believe Ixil has one for the zzr600 some members use with luggage racks.

Ahh good post, nice I'm going to look into the 03/04 header, luggage racks would be handy for longer rides + the gf doesnt have to worry about burning her leg... had a bad first experience of jumping off the right side while I was mid-sentence of "Make sure you get off the left side so you dont burn yourself." Got to play doctor though!

I have read a shorty exhaust on a bike like ours will cause a loss of torque.

"For the record, I read this somewhere and can not produce and proof of this"

i did this on my bike with an rs3 yosh. it looks really good but it does make it REALLY loud. i drilled out the rivits and cut down the baffels and then repacked the fiberglass. i also wrapped the baffel with heat tape so the exhaust wouldnt get as hot on the outside. i took about 7 inches off the rs3. i also took the silencer off last summer but im thinking about reinstalling it to see if it will quiet her down a little.

it not cut down yet in my sig pic fyi
