Default Fuel switch...

Tonight, after a ride, I messed with my fuel switch (ON, OFF, RES) and found out the the bike is running normally regardless of which one of the 3 facing up... shouldn't "off" cut fuel flow and turn the bike off soon after it's turned up?

Is something weird going on inside there?

Any input is appreciated

Depends how long you ran it for.

There is still residual fuel left to burn even when supply is cut from the tank to the bike.

Reserve, of course it would run properly.
On, well..erm..yeah.

I'm not an expert on the exact function of that switch, but I think it takes a while for the fuel to run out after you switch to "off," since there's still some fuel in the system.

Once ,when I first got the bike, I forgot the switch and started it up after a short rest stop with the switch set to "off." I was able to startup, warm up a little, and ride a few blocks with the switch off before I noticed something wrong.

If you leave your switch off long enough, I'm sure you'll see what you expect. But I'm not sure running out of gas is very good for the engine.

Gotcha... I ran it for about 2-3 mins and nothing... as for why, I turned the switch to RES while driving home last couple miles... when I got home, I figured I'd mess with it for no reason...

It's not like I mixed 2 chemicals together and waited for something... I wanted to know how fast it will shut the fuel off... it didn't, so here I am asking why...

so,

on = on, but when you run out of gas there will still be a small amount left in the tank. thats when you switch to reserve. i don't know if your bike has a gas gauge or not, but that is a safety feature to give you a few (10-20?) more miles in the event you aren't paying attention.

so if you ride in reserve and run out of gas you are done. no second chances.

off is off, but you have to burn the fuel out of the carb bowls. this can take 5-10 minutes or so if the bike is just idling. in fact just tonight i put my gf's honda 400 in the basement so i took the tank off and burned the fuel out of the bowls. it took about 5 minutes.

the off position is nice if you need to take the tank off or if your carbs have any issues

Exactly.

To say the same thing in a different way, the petcock is attached to two "straws" that go up into the bottom of the tank. In the ON position, it "drinks" from the longer of the two "straws". In the RES position it drinks from the shorter of the two "straws". Off turns cuz the fuel flow off at the petcock, but there's still about 5-10 ounces in the fuel lines & the carb float bowls. Thus the delay when you turn it off while the bike is still running.

I decided to put it off for now.. in the spring I'm going to try out my friend's zx6r and see how I like it compared to my zzr... I really like the looks of it, but I'm not sure if I'll like the riding position compared to the zzr
