520 conversion.
I just ordered a 520 conversion. It is 14 front and 40 rear, so that makes it -1 in the front.
Has anybody done this conversion? I just want to know how much -1 will effect my Speedo, and RPM's when cruising in 6th.

Basically all it is, is a chain conversion from our stock 530 chain to a 520 for a little bit of wieght reduction. and they normally come with a -1 front sprocket the rear stays stock.
The price wasnt to bad it was 164 for the chain and sprockets. I ordered it from dennis kirk.
I needed to replace my chain anyways it was stretched beyond adjustment.

Either way, lots of people do it to lose some bike weight. I don't think it's all that much, but i've never weighed both chains and sprocket setups.
I personally like the gearing our bikes have when it's stock. I haven't, and more than likely won't touch it.

Its not so much losing the overall weight... Its losing the rotating mass which allows the chain to spin faster sooner thus allowing increased accelerating. Prolly not incredibly noticeable but I havent done it so I really cant say.

If your running the stock gears it shouldnt be. If it is your speedo sensor could be going bad.

The benefit is so miniscule, especially on a street bike, that the 520 conversion isn't really worth replacing a perfectly good stock drivetrain... unless your stock chain & sprockets need replacing anyway.
In fact, if you wanna get into the knitty gritty of it, going 1 down in the front will probably erase any benefit you get from the 520 conversion anyway beacuse it makes for a tighter radius turn.
It's like anything going around a corner, when you reduce the turning radius it takes more effort to make the turn at the same speed. So even though you reduced the weight of the chain, you're increasing the effort required to make it turn nearly 180 degrees around that smaller countershaft.
For this reason, it's always best to increase the size of your rear sprocket than decrease the size of the front.
But... with all that said, I don't think you'll notice much of a difference. If you feel anything, it'll probably just be a placebo effect.

Actually, yes, speedo's are usually off from the factory. Stock bikes will give anywhere between an 8 & 12% speedo error depending on make & model. And speedo sensors don't slowly go bad or get worse, when it goes bad you'll just see 0mph all of a sudden.

When i first got mine, about three weeks later mine was doing the same thing. My speedo was reading in the 80's when i was doing only 40's. I took it back since it was still in the warrenty. they told me it was the speedo sensor.
as for my chain and sprockets. yep my chain was shot. Poor maintenance on it. It had a kink in it i couldnt get out so i ordered the 520 kit since i was going to get everything anyways.

I thought the same. I have had them go bad on other bikes at the shop, they do normally read nothing. I took it back figuering it was a internal issue.
