Default Bah! Oil Drain Plug leak!

I frekin overtorqued the drain plug and stripped the threads!...... I know i did because the dumass that i am kept on turning til the drain plug lost tension. Drained oil; added oil and plug back in.. still its dripping.

Whats the easiest route here guys? Tap it with a slightly larger self tapping plug or buy a heli coil thread repair kit? Not familiar with either solution as this is the first time I've ever done this.

Apparently the same thing happened on my bike at the hands of the previous owner.

My plug has some sort of washer that takes care of it but I think it's made specifically for this application.

Look into a new pan is your best bet...Retapping the threads may not stop the leaking...And if there's one thing you never want, it's oil leaking...

Hmm.. "may not stop the leaking" so you are saying it "might work"? well if thats the case I'm gonna give a go with a home remedy before going full blown and buying a new pan. I'm just lucky we've had pretty bad weather because i'd feel like crap if were nice and me not riding.

There's nothing wrong with retapping...But look real close all around where the threads are located and make sure there's no little itty bitty cracks shooting up the wall of the threads...If there is, you have no choice but to buy new (or used on ebay)

I would go with the new pan route. Let's just say I have disturbing memories of a rear wheel with oil sprayed on it. I wouldn't want to have that "maybe (or) probably it's not leaking" as I'm going into a turn...

I fix things what I like to call 'the right way'. And for me, I would definatly pull the pan and retap. If you do it right (which is super easy I might add) it WILL fix it. just my .02 though

+ 1 on re-tapping.

If I were in your position I'd pull the pan myself & bring it to a metal working/welding shop. Removing the pan is very straight forward. You might have to drop the exhaust though. Replacing the pan is a little more involved, but still pretty easy. I can post the procedure from my service manual if you like.

There is absolutely no reason not to helicoil or timsert it except that it will have to be done off bike. If it were me, and I'm glad it's not, I migh be inclined to try an oversize plug except that you also have to find a source for oversized crush washers.

Did you use a torque wrench when you re-tightened the oil drain plug? The owners manual and the service manual both state 14.5 ft-lbs for the drain plug. If you try re-tightening bolts just by feel, that have certain torque specifications you could run the risk of over tightening and in your case stripping the threads or even cracking the oil pan assembly. Do yourself a big favor, buy a service manual and a torque wrench. You'll save yourself a bunch headaches and money. I hope everything works out for you. Jay

The 2005-2008 ZZR600 has one gas tank! It holds at total of 4.8 gallons of which 3.7 is available until you have to switch to reserve to use the remaining 1.1 gallons of gas.

Yah bro i used a torque wrench... I'm going to Sears tomorrow to get a nice craftsman one. Used one of those harbor freight click-crap torque wrenches I also have a service manual.

Bought a replacement plug and oil just to see if it would do the trick.... WHHHAATTYAAAKNOW!!! I'm oil-free and back in business; guess it was the plug. Took it out for a 30 minute spin; and 3 hours later no oil in the garage. Lesson learned? Don't use cheap tools and don't kick the garage wall it leaves a dent.
