Suspension set up
Can anyone help?
I've recently bought an old zzr600 (1990) which I absolutely love and have just done my first track day on it (Cadwell park - Awesome track!) which was great. The only problem I encountered with the bike, was on heavy cornering, ie, hairpins, I was leaning the bike to the point of grinding the exhaust pipe into the tarmac! This is obviously not ideal.
Has anyone else had this problem? I know the stock spring in the ZZR's is reputed to be soft, but surely this should not be happening?!
Any help, greatly received.
David

just an fyi for the rest, they never made a pure zzr 600 in the USA we just got a rebadged zx6r. as for your suspension, is it adjustable? if so stiffen the crap out of it!

Cheers for the reply, the history of the bike transpires to be quite complicated. The chassis is off a zx400 and it has a zzr600 engine! it occurs to me that if the stock suspension on it is off the 400model, it may simply be too soft for the heavy 600 engine? The guy in my shop say's you can't simply change the spring and have to change the whole suspension assembly. Anyone know if this is the case?

you could change the weight of oil in the forks, i dunno what it is stock, but perhaps 15w? as for the rear you would hafta find an aftermarket adjustable type shock im sure.

look tighten all your dampening down, i grind footpegs at palomar all the time, its not necessarily the suspension however tighten your dampening down front and rear. thats what i did however i still grind footpegs and it also depends on your pipe and the position of it on the bike. i grind pegs b4 pipe maybe your pipe is too low or toofar out. just play around with your suspension and get the good feel of it.

(let me pull my foot out of my mouth) ok your right i didn't see the 1990 but its a possability thatit "might" be adjustable, then i guess i would say make sure you have enough fluid in your forks and suspension after that i would buy a stiffer spring.

Thanks for all the advise guys. I'm going to have a play with the pre load tonight but i'm not convinced it will help too much. Am rapidly coming to the conclusion that the spring is simply too soft and the pipe is mounted a bit too far out.
Is it possible to simply change the spring or do you have to replace the entire suspension unit. This is what the shops are telling me however maybe they are being too sensible?!
