Default no speedo cable = odometer not working????

As stated a couple weeks ago I broke the speedo cable housing that is mouted on our front forks and this weekend I went to reset my tripometer and noticed after about 10 miles that it wasnt working and then I realize that if one isnt working the other shouldnt either and sure enuf it doesnt. Now I already ordered a new housing from Kawi so my question is...Does the speedometer cable transfer this info to the odo/trip and tell it to scroll or is it something else?

yep. the odometer/trip run off of the gears that the speedo cable provides due to the speed.
