K&N Replacement Air Filter?

Just got myself a race conical akrapovic system for my bike so now i've got to save up to get a dynojet kit fitted as the factory items you seem to like aren't anywhere near as well known in the UK.

Anyway at the same time i suppose it would be a good idea to fit a K&N replacement filter but was just wondering if any of you have or have had one fitted at anytime and your thoughts on them

Don't waste the money on a K&N filter, removing the metal screen out of the stock filter will do the same thing for $0.

I've got a K&N.. yeah, i'm not all that impressed with it. In fact, I thought the way it was built was kinda of shoddy. I don't really see anything wrong with the stock filter minus the metal screen like everyone else says.

the thing with the k&n is it last a lifetime u never have to buy another

Don't bother with the K&N. I have read and was also told by a racer at the track that the K&N filter has neglible results over using the stock filter. I would just take out that metal screen that goes over the filter.

Probably a dumb question here as I haven't taken off the tank to check out the filter, but can the stock filter be cleaned in the same manner that a K&N can? I know this is a major selling point for K&N replacement filters for cars.

Back in the days of small and unoptimized airboxes, a K&N filter was a great mod. Today's bikes don't really benefit from it. Put it in the dustbin with ignition upgrades and some other stuff that used to be power adders.

Yes, Toddman, the stock filter can be cleaned. Kawasaki recommends soaking it in a high flashpoint solvent (NOT mineral spirits, gasoline or kerosene, something more like good quality laquer thinner), then wring it out, and let it completely air dry. Then use a high quality foam filter oil to saturate the foam, then wrap the filter in a rag or paper towels and wring out the excess.

It's real important that you don't use something like gasoline or kerosene to clean the filter and that it's totally dry before you proceed. Some trace elements of those flammable liquids could remain behind and cause a nasty fire if the carbs decide to backfire.
