Default ZX7 issues

All right guys, I finally got around to cleaning the carbs on my 02 ZX7r, and that was it she is running like a champ. However, after sitting for a few days when I tried to start it, it gave a small backfire. Something like it is filling with gas. What would you check first, plugs? what else?

azzazel... have you done ANY carbs before cuz that would be helpful. do you know how carbs work?
it makes it a lot more difficult if you don't really know what you're trying to clean.
a manual is a good mechanics best friend... aside from the proper tools.

i've been thru my 92 7r carbs several times so i am familiar w/ them if you have questions... i'm also an MMI grad so i like to think i can wrench decently.

PS... rotty... give it a bit before you start tearing into it all over again. they are combustion engines and backfires happen once in a while. you might even expect something like that after carb work. if it continues then i'd get into it. running issues or just the one backfire? backfires are usually a result of unburnt fuel exploding once it has exited the combustion chamber.

it is likely after a carb clean that you've either plugged a jet after shaking up all the gunk or you have a stuck float. a stuck float can flood a cylinder if there is a valve open. making a no start condition. you can tell you have a stuck float if you take the carbs off being careful to keep them level then tipping them forward or backward and gas will most likely run out of the carb body sooner on a carb w/ a stuck float.

clean em again.

I think it may be electrical and not carbs. I will start tracing the electrical and see what I find.

the kicker is that you'll also need the kawasaki special pilot adjuster tool (the motion pro doesn't work on my 7r carbs) or the morgan carbtune adjuster tool. tack on another 70 or 80 bucks for that tool alone. tack on another 70 or 80 for the sync tool.
but, if you're nice i could copy the carb section from my shop manual.

back to the pilot adjuster... you need one w/ long screwdriver bits since the pilot screw is WAAAY up there inside the slot for the screw.

just google morgan carbtune pilot adjuster and look at the pics and you'll see the type of tool you're looking for.

Alright, I figured it out.....lol.....It was two things. The first one was that I forgot to connect a hose that ran from the ram air to the carbs. This is what apparently pressures the fuel through them....Also, when I gapped the spark plugs, I gapped them a little further than they needed to be. Needless to say, she is running like a champ again. Thanks everybody
