Default Front/Rear Sprockets

Any suggestions on what sprockets to use? Don't mind losing some top end power but did not want lose alot. Have never changed out sprockets before so just looking for someone to educate me.

Sprocket specialties are one on the better co in my opinion. I've gone just +2 in the rear and it made a noticable difference. I have heard of some people going -1 in the front and +2 in the rear and were happy with the outcome. With my set up I didn't really lose much top end if any. I think it was a happy medium. Hope this helps

I'm pretty sure the stock sprockets were 16/43. Mine is 15/43, bought it that way. How does -1 in the front affect the performance? I'm in need of a new chain so I thought I should consider changing out the sprockets at the same time. I've never changed the stock gearing before and just trying to make sence of it all before I buy.

I am (-1) in the front for years now. I have an AFAM front sprocket and a Renthal rear. It is not hard to change them at all. Use an impact gun to do the front and rear sprocket nut. Be careful when you take off the front sprocket; there is a little button/rod that holds the hydrolic line in place. You will see it once you take the front sprocket cover off.

I would recommend you replace the chain at the same time. Are you going with a 520 conversion? I did. D.I.D x-ring chain. Be careful when you cut the chain; don't cut it to short.

I used my dremel to just cut the old chain off. I bought chain rivet tool to put the new link on though.

While I had the rear wheel off to put the rear sprocket on I greased the inside of the hubs and the axle. I also change the pads last season too while the caliper was off. Make sure you torque the sprocket down correctly in a criss-cross pattern. 54ft.-lbs I believe....don't quote me though.

Check out the crush drive too while you are at it. Make sure the rubber pieces are not cracked or brittle.

PS: The (-1) in the front will lose you about 10-15 mph off of your top end. On mine I hit the rev limiter before the throttle is pinned.....

-1 in the front is the same as +2 in the rear = more bottom end or quicker out of the hole. The smaller the rear or larger the front = more top end. 1 tooth on the front either way equals 2 in the rear the opposite way.

Yeah, am putting a new chain on as well. Was planning on staying with the 525 though. I have been told it's a more durable chain for street use.

the 525 chain should last longer, and as for the sprockets steel should last a bit longer than aluminum but will weigh alittle more.

My front AFAM sprocket is steel; the rear Renthal is aluminum. Hogwash about the 520 chain being less durable. I had my first set on for over 10,000 miles. The only reason why I changed it last season was because a tooth was broken off the rear sprocket. I have never once had any problems with the 520.

Thanks for the info guys. Ordered it up last weekend. Stayed with a 525 chain and -1 front(steel) and changed to a +1 in the rear(aluminum). Hopefully it will be here tomorrow so I can get the pig back on the road. Been perfect bike weather here in Phoenix and naturally my shit is sitting in the garage in pieces.

just a pointer make sure to leave the bike in gear and put a 2x4 in the rear wheel and do the front first or just use a impact gun, also dont cut the chain to short!
And good luck, im doing my rear soon i hope.
