In the UK they were known as ZXR750L
The ZX7R came out over here in 1996.

what is going on here is that many of you are confusing the european model designation w/ the US model designation. thus, you're thinking that the "r" in the euro designation means that it is an "r" model otherwise known as the "race" model... it is not.
a zxr750 in europe is a zx7 in the states
a zxr750r in europe is a zx7r in the states

what it says on the tach is zxr... not zx7r. this is probably because the tachs were all the same rather than being different for euro and US models. i imagine if they were going to use a different tach for the US it would have said ZX

if you'll look at the link i posted... "there was no R in '95"

horsepower ratings (at the crank) and weight:

91 & 92 zx7 = 100 hp and 195kg / 91 & 92 zx7r = 121 hp and 190kg
93 thru 95 zx7 = 119 hp and 205kg / 93 & 94 zx7r = 121 hp and 200kg

to ease confusion... those in the know refer to them as J models vs. K models for the 91 and 92 years and L models vs. M models for 93-95 years as to not even get into the R or R'nt it discussion.

THIS IS ALL MADE VERY CLEAR IN THE LINK I POSTED
