I thought I would post this here cause I need women specific recommendations...
If you wear full gear when you go out, what are you wearing? I don't even have a bike yet but I love looking at all the gear online...I can already tell I am going to be wearing my full gear all the time, even though it is always 90plus here in the summer and I will be sweating like a pig..... I am just way too scared to get hurt.
This is a silly question but I want to ride my bike to college & wear full gear...so if I were to get a 1 pc suit, I would just take it off and stow it somewhere and have my regular clothes underneath? People will look at me crazy right? Haha. It's okay if they do, I would rather be safe. Or should I opt for a 2 pc which zips together.
I am having a dilemma because it is so hot in Texas...mesh would be preferable but I keep hearing it doesn't protect the way leather does. So should I just suck it up and wear the leather?
I feel like I should just buy one of those Komodo suits or similar..even though I think they are only for men? What makes me wonder is I have never seen anyone where I live wearing full gear so I know I will stand out. I see shorts & sneaker guys....no one in 1 pc leathers, haha.
Leathers (jacket & pants - mine are two-piece, Teknic)
Gauntlet gloves (Alpinestar)
Back protector (a real one, not the piece of foam that came with the jacket)
Over the calf race boots (Alpinestar SMX)
Full face helmet (Arai Quantum II)
My minimum gear for street riding is:
Leather jacket (Joe Rocket)
Jeans
Gauntlet gloves
Alpinestar SMX boots
Arai helmet
For street riding, I sometime wear:
riding pants with knee and hip armor instead of jeans
back protector under my street jacket
full leathers
What you wear depends on how much risk you are willing to take. I wear jeans knowing they aren't the best protection. When I don't want to take as much of a risk, I wear my riding pants, when I want the least risk, I wear my track gear.
As far as gear that you can wear over your clothes, I hear people talk about Aerostich a lot. I think it's kind of pricey, though you often get what you pay for.
At the minimum, you should look at a leather or textile jacket, riding pants, DECENT BOOTS, gloves and a full face helmet. Please do not underestimate the importance of over the calf riding boots. They don't have to be "race" boots. There are decent street bred riding boots. But you really need to protect your feet, ankles and lower legs as much as the rest of you. You don't even have to be involved in a crash to injure yourself.
Welcome!!!
I have to agree with AC. Especially on the boot topic. I never skimp on ankle coverage. I never ride with any thing that does not go over my ankles....even if it's just a pair of work boots.

My girlfriend has a GREAT pair of Sidi touring boots. She can walk around pretty much all day in them. She wrecked in them once and they did the job very well. Tore off a panel on the one toe, but her feet and ankles were totally fine.
She also usually wears a perforated leather jacket (which are decent up until the mid 90's if you get a nicely perf'd one), and a pair of first gear overpants. They can be taken off without taking off your boots and fit inside a backpack really easily. Takes about a minute to get everything on and off.
She also wears a helmet and gloves, obviously. And like I said- she was wearing all of this when she went down. she was actually wearing a textile jacket which got shredded, but protected her. Now she wears leather.
A one piece leather suit for the street is silly. I think i've worn mine ONCE on the street, and that was at deal's gap.

And welcome to SBN!
took the words out of my mouth (my wife is the same).

I live in Austin, TX and it gets pretty hot here. I always wear my leather a* pants, sidi b2 boots, gloves, and in hot weather a textile jacket, in <80 weather my leather jacket (which zips to my pants). It's fine. Yes, I get a little sweaty, but it's bearable. As a caveat, though, I don't generally ride in stop and go traffic. When I have had to ride in rush hour in the past, I have worn jeans with icon field armor leg armor under my jeans. Lately, though, I just can't bring myself to ride in anything less than my leather pants. My rear and hips just feel naked without the protection...

I have to disagree with you here, Kevin. Whether it's one piece or two piece, leather is best. If a leather jacket is ok, why not pants as well? And if jacket and pants are ok, why not a one piece? Does it really matter?
Granted, I don't wear my full leathers to work often (actually I've done it once, when it was really cold out), but I've worn them on longer rides about as many times as I've worn them for track days, in all kinds of weather. I feel less naked in my leathers than I do in jeans & a jacket, or even my denier riding pants. And for cooler weather it makes the rode more enjoyable.
