I gotta say, I don't care for those short boots. They won't protect your ankles well, or lower legs at all.
I have first hand (or leg) experience with how much over-the-calf boots do protect you. I have Alpinestars Womens boots, which look just like the boots SVmom posted a picture of above, except mine are black.
Anyway, I was out riding the Sunday before last, and we all stopped on the side of the road for a minute to wait on some people who had fallen behind. I was sitting there on the bike and turned to say something to the guy behind me.
As I turned to look back over my left shoulder, the bike shifted it's weight under me. I tried to put my right foot on the ground to readjust my balance, but there was NO GROUND under my right foot. I didn't realize that the shoulder of the road to my right was as sloped as it was.
By the time I realized what was happening, the bike had gone past it's balance point. I tried to hold it up, but it was futile, and I had to let it down as easy as I could, on the grass.
Here's the important part:
As it went over to the right, the left footpeg came up and scraped along the inside of my left lower leg above my ankle.
Now, I had denier riding pants & my alpinestars boots on. And the footpeg still left a huge bruise and lump where it contacted my leg. That was through my pants and boot. The damn thing still hurts right now.
First of all, if I had been wearing jeans, they would have been ripped. but more importantly, if I had been wearing short boots, my leg would have been laid open.
I will N-E-V-E-R wear anything less while riding than the boots I was wearing that day, and I'm thinking about finding some better ones.
BTW - that was the first time in the entire 2.5 years and 27k+ miles of that bike's life that it's touched the ground. I was pretty ticked off at myself, but sh!t happens. Now I don't have to worry about dropping any more.
